    Anybody ever tried to register a home built trailer in CA? It's a PITA, we ended up deciding to just trailer it to MS and register it there.

    Really? The folks at the CHP office seemed a little confused about assigning a VIN and a bunch of other stuff that would keep us from getting it registered before we move.

    CHP is not DMV. CHP doesn't have anything to do with it, its all done at DMV.

    According to CHP they have to do an inspection (after we fill out a something or other form) then assign a new VIN, then we get to go to the DMV with the new VIN and get a title.

    I drove down, filled out a form saying I built it. filled in a couple number$$ for materials, brought receipts but they didn't care. They walked out looked at the lights, safety chain and slapped a vin on it and gave me a plate.

    I did it also with a harbor freight trailer 10-12 years ago. The harbor freight trailer I had to build hand tight in the parking lot, then tossed it in the back of the truck when I was done.

    never went to chp either time.

    CHP doesn't issue license plates. If the DMV tells you to get something inspected then go, other than that DMV issued the plates-do what they want.

    Trailer a trailer?? If thats easier then why tow/build it in the first place.

    The only catch is if you claim it weighs over 3k. Then you have to have an offical brake and light check.
