4.10 gears to 4.83? maybe?

Yesterday I was reading a tread about a guy and his second gen Tacoma swapping the stock gears for 4.83's, he said it rode awesome "like it should" he's running 285 tires.. trying to narrow it down as much as I can.. lol

I don't know how to find the thread again I'd like to reread it, find out where/how much I can get some for!

 

4:83's would be overkill for a 285.

Most folks get 4:56 for 33s or 35s IF they re-gear.

No re-gear is needed for 285s

 

You would have more low end wouldn't you? those are big heavy tires, they would take a lot to turn. I think his truck was a 2.7

 

I thought the stock 2nd gens had 4.10's in them stock? My head was filled with Celica knowledge and now I'm trying to replace it with Tacoma knowledge.

 

I should have stated. I plan on running 265/75 16's. Would 4.56's give it a decent amount of pep? I find it kind of sluggish on the high way, so I figure shorter gearing would help?

 

4.0L = 3.73
2.7L = 4.10's


going to 265/75/16's over either the 245/75 or 265/70's you really dont need the gears, spend it elsewhere (locker or gas for your vehicle)

 

By "locker" I'm going to assume you mean diff, or hubs? I'm unsure..

And I have no idea what you mean by "gas" Sorry for being such a noob

 

No need to re-gear for 285s... if i go 35s though, 4.56s would be the way to go

by locker yes, i mean a diff locker for the rear of your truck. gas, the stuff you put in the tank to make it move.

its always going to be a 2.7... no matter the gears... you have 4 low for a reason.

 

I ran 265/75's on my 06 2.7L without regearing. I didn't have any problems on the highway. The only time it was a problem was the way I had to pull out of our neighborhood, up one hill onto another uphill. Then I just had to make sure I had a big enough hole.

 

265 tires, I would leave stock gears. Not worth the money. And depending if you're 4x4 or not. If you are you need front and rear. The 4.10 gear should be good up to 33s.

I'm going to stay with what I got right now. I'll probably get a locker, eventually instead. It would be cooler.

 

its simple relativity.

2.7's start with 4.10's with 245/75/16 tires. calculate tire size difference then calculate gear difference to reach stock gearing,

265/75/16 = 3.9% bigger .... 4.10 x 1.039 = 4.26 gearing to remain the same engine RPM's at the same speed.
285/75/16 = 7.8% bigger .... 4.10 x 1.078 = 4.41 gearing
305/75/16 = 11.9% bigger .... 4.10 x 1.119 = 4.59 gearing
315/75/16 = 13.6% bigger ... 4.10 x 1.136 = 4.66 gearing


Granted you cant get most of those gearings so you get close, usually the next notch above which will give you a lil more pep to account for the extra weight as well. and obviously simply take the 4.10 x XXXX and change it for 3.73 x XXXX for the v6.
