I have a gut feeling a front locker won't help a whole lot without a rear. This makes me wish spoonmans truck was still for sale

Why not a lunchbox in the rear. Pull it whn you get back and sell it.?
And yes, you can get one for the front. But I would suggest disco your front drive shaft. If it was in the rear, you wouldnt have to.

    Welded rears scare me lol

Hmm... That's an idea. Don't you have one? Will it be safe and or comfortable for that long trip. After rock therapy I'm continuing to California and then back home

No problems whatsoever. Ive been running mine for years with no issues whatsoever. Not even strange tire wear. Full locked, 100%.

If I can find a lunch box locker for the front I'll run it. It won't engage unless 4 wheel drive is engaged and the front starts slipping. There's a thread that I'm following tags started today about using one on the front.

Slipping dont have anything to do with it. When you engage 4x4, you are locked.
Forget my comment about dissengaging the driveline. Not sure where my head was at.
I'm just not sure if I would rather be locked in the rear with one tire wheel pulling up front or vice versa.

Okay I'm learning this locker stuff as I go so can you elaborate on the slipping of the front with a lunch box locker?

I have a feeling you would tear that lunchbox locker up at rock therapy, I don't think they are very strong and can't take the abuse rock therapy would bring if you did some moderately rough trails.

Not sure what slipping you are speaking of.
A limited slip diff up front would do that. That tire that gets grip, gets the traction in that case.
Unlike an open locker that you have now which is "the tire that slips, gets the grip. (useless which is why I run a full time in the rear)

For example your truck in 2wd mode: Youre crossing a ditch, both tires in the front are on the ground, one tire in the rear is in the air. Guess which tire is spinning? The tire in the air. Unless you old school it and apply ebrake which might or might not bump you through.

Your tryck in 4wd with a locker in the front: Both front tires are pulling 100% while your rear is getting power to one tire, the tire that is slipping.

Your truck in 4wd with a locker in the rear: Both rear tires have power 100%,, the front is switching to the wheel that is slipping.

Problem with a locker in the front is your cv's are the week link. Being locked with shitty cv's is a no-no.
Lots of other things will break long before a properly installed lunchbox.

Ugh I really don't want to buy an arb locker but I might have to. So let me get this straight. I thought lunch box lockers only engage when high rpms are applied to the diff. Is that right?

I've never ran a lunchbox locker, but being with stock carrier stuff inherently makes it weaker right? Compared to other options I suppose, but if they get the job done go for it!

Im not gonna install a non selectable locker in my rear. I'm not a fan of the idea. But I'm perfectly comfortable with putting one in the front since I'm not using 4x4 on the streets

Wrong. You are locked, 100% under any acceleration.
