I might have to sell/trade it in before my warranty expires!!!! That price is absurd!!!! Excellent right up btw op, thank you! I'll keep this just in case!

There is a TSB for this. My dealer did the TSB for just over $200 (I was out of warranty). Yeah, I could have saved some money by doing it myself - but I'm lazy. $1200? Ri-fooking-diculous.

My heat and air used to work only on high but now it doesn't work on any speeds. The fan does not blow any air whatsoever. Would it be the resistor causing that or something else?

    Reserected from the dead.
That resistor change out is usually the problem. Check the plug first to make sure it is connected properly.

This is pretty easy to do. Just takes some bending oround to get a good look under the dash.

Just replaced this in my 05. Worked like a champ. As a note for others - the new resister I got from the dealership (~$35) looked way more like a circuit board than a resistor, aka it was different from the original. Hopefully their redesign of the part makes it last longer!

Don't count on it lasting, after 3 years my 2011 newer design "resistor" is shot, there was something on the board that is just melted. Ordered a new ceramic coated "improved design" after-market for $25 so I hope it lasts as this seems a little pathetic for a Toyota. Thanks for the thread so I could locate it!

Toyota has a TSB for this and requires that you splice in the new connector as well as replace the resistor. I paid $63.00 for the parts from Toyota, but it is the right way to do it because the connector itself under inspection has gotten hot and burned. It took me 20 to 30 minutes to do it myself but it is done right. I was pissed that as there is a TSB on it that Toyota still makes you buy the parts if you are out of warranty.

Link please? I might have to look up that TSB if this happens again.

My 2005 had this problem back in December 2013. After reading this forum and several others I checked with the Toyota dealer. He quoted $40.80 for the resistor. I asked about a replacement wiring harness in case it was also needed. After spending several minutes in his books and on the phone said the Toyota wiring harness was not available but they were using a GM harness part #1530-6069 that worked fine. I believe it is an old Saturn part. Weird. I didn't get a price quote on the Saturn harness but am betting it wasn't $1200. BTW - the replacement resistor carries a different part number than the original so they did upgrade something. Old # 87138-04050 New# 87138-04052. As of this minute just unplugging, coating with grease, then plugging back in fixes it for about a month at a time. No tools required for this cheap fix.

I followed the TSB (I believe) and bought the new p/n resistor on ebay, a new plug from an electrical store (mouser/newark) and cut out the burnt section of wire and replaced it.
That'll probably be your cheapest more permanent solution.
