Why is the taco engine so weak?

    You think it's weak? You should try driving a DC 4x4 1st gen with the 3.4 V6.

    There is a long delay from input to rev increase.

    I felt the same way when I got mine. Seemed like I had to really stomp on it to get it to jump like my '01 would do with just a small push on the throttle.
    Even bigger difference compared to the wife's V6 RAV4.

    You'll get used to it.I've got 5 months and 6500 miles on it and I don't even think about it any more.

    Might be a deliberate thing Toyota did to improve gas mileage - keep the throttle response low to help avoid "jackrabbit" starts.

    My taco has 33" AT tires and a 3" lift.

    My Xterra has 33" mud tires, same 3" lift, full plate steel bumper w/12k winch, full 3/16" plate steel skids, DOM sliders and a steel roof rack. And it will smoke my taco - I bet by 3 car lengths in the 1/4 mile.

    I do think this is part of the problem. Throttle take up seems very slow. Which is sort of what I was describing in my OP - you really have to get into the throttle to make some power.

    Very possible. Toyota is not know for performance I'm pretty sure it's all drive-by-wire, so throttle tuning (just the map) should be fairly straightforward for someone who can work with the code.

    Surprised there don't seem to be many options.

    The Nissan has a slight mechanical advantage in second gear, combined with the higher output, could be the reason it pulls ahead?

    You should have purchased a sports car if that is what you really wanted. It is a 4X4 truck. You want it strong and reliable. Fast quarter mile times are not conducive to these qualities.

    It's just the throttle mapping. You have to press the throttle down more, that doesn't mean it has less power...

    As for the throttle response issue. I removed the secondary (charcoal) air filter and noticed much improved throttle response. Not turbo charged, intercooled sports car, but close (let's go Xterra hunting):thumbsup:
