Why is the taco engine so weak?

I hate these posts....You drove the truck before you bought it, right? You did know that modding it by lifting, tires would affect it...right?

Mine is modded and pulls my landscaping trailer just fine.

I partially agree, a friend of mine has the same truck as I do and he asked me
if mine was a struggle to get going. I said yes and here's why. It's not that it's slow but the throttle or accelerator is harder to push physically. I explained to him that it's a 4X4, if your in 4L and you have a limp pedal your going to break things. So IMHO it's designed that way. Hey my Tundra 2X2 pedal was limp feeling and it felt totally different. Had him drive a friends 2X2 4.0 and he said
"I see what your talking about now" btw the 33's will slow it downnnnn!

 

I definitely noticed a decrease in felt power between my taco and my old Dakota, especially when towing a trailer or with a load in the bed. The dakota did have a V8 and a 5 speed instead but it was also geared very differently than the 6 speed and the HP and Torque specs are very close. That said I do like my tacoma, it tows trailers well and has never let me down even when pulling trailers at, or on the rare occasion, over the tow rating. It just does it differently than my dakota did, the transmission and drive feels more like a car than a full size truck.

 

My 4.0 Taco with the 5A is an absolute beast compared to both my old 2.4 Frontier with 5M and my buddy's 2.7 Taco with 5A. Granted, I'm on the stock 245's.

 

My truck flies, so much power I'm scared to use it. I don't have any complaints. Maybe you should trade it in for a diesel?

 

weak? what is weak? hell mine is plenty of power stock tires and keep up the basic matainace do the trick.. I guess your mind is weak therofor

I just got home with my new 14 DCSB 4x4 and I have to agree with the OP. It seems my 06 felt more responsive and it had 295x70x17 tires. My new one is stock at this time, and I cant help but think it lacks in the guts dept.

 

IDK about anything other than my 08, but it has enough for me. I do notice it is more sluggish with my summer tires (255 75 r17) versus my winter 245's. I would never line it up against my wife's '07 X tho, it will blow the Taco away. I am not sure what Nissan did, but the Xterra is fast, and I don't think it's that much lighter.

 

's one of the reasons I got the manual, much easier to rev it out and keep the engine from hunting at speed.

For me the v6 6spd 4x4 on stock 245's is a dog going up the mountains but my last car was factory-turbocharged and my motorcycle is a rocket ship comparatively (317 lbs @ 68 hp) so I just downshift when I need to though I do catch myself at WOT a lot and the truck is barely keeping up even when nothing is in the bed. I'm looking forward to the supercharger to offset the altitude losses and give the truck the power it should have from the factory.

I chalk the adequate yet uninspiring engine performance to a conservative Japanese design to increase engine life/reliability.

 

I just bought the 2017 Tacoma with the 9.6 liter...so very sluggish. My 1989 22RE was much more responsive. WTF, Toyota??

 

I am comparing the horsepower by stock manufacturers specs, which both of mine were, the taco is 236 and the dodge 4.7 is 230, about as close to an apples to apples comparison you can get except for the dodge's two extra cylinders and 5 speed vs 6 speed. I'm not sure what factor had the most impact on the felt power, I'm assuming the different gearing but the extra cylinders could have had an effect. When driving at altitude, which most of my driving is at 8k+, my dodge definitely had an edge especially when hauling, I notice that my taco is much more sluggish pulling the same mountain passes with 5000+ lbs on the back than my dakota ever was.
