Is it possible to warp a rotor by over tightening the lug nuts?

Is it possible to warp a rotor by over tightening the lugnuts?

My 2012 DCSB just went through its 15,000 mile service/checkup at the dealer and passed with no issues. I now have a pretty good shake in the steering wheel when I brake at more the 60 mph. I only feel it in the steering wheel, not the pedal. I’m thinking maybe they over torqued the lug nuts putting everything back together. Is that possible?

I had this happen on my Camry. My mechanic just turned the one rotor and the shimmie went away.

Yup and yup... A good shop will use torque drivers that tighten to a set lb.

not only yes, but you can actually pull the studs through the rotor or loosen the studs also...

 

Over tightening itself does not warp them. It's not having equal torque that warps rotors.

 

Tacoma should be torque to 80 lbs I believe

 

Thanks for taking the time to post. I go back to the dealer for all this stuff because I "hope" they do it often enough to know what the heck they are doing. Oh well.

Absolutely! I get the stink eye every time I rail on them about using a torque wrench by hand and doing it evenly. Rotors aren't what they used to be, there is no mass there anymore. Get some cowboy with an air wrench and you're doing a brake job when you get home!

I just got off the phone with the service department and have an appointment this Friday. Of course he says he's never heard about over tightening the lug nuts warping a rotor and they use only the right tools for the job. OK. I do a 5 tire rotation, maybe the guy was mad at me for making him do extra work.

This is the second truck I bought from this place and I went back because they were so good the first time. I keep my trucks a long time and the place has changed since I was there last.

I'm bummed.

 

From the symptoms, it could be the lugs, but could also be that you threw a weight on the wheel, or the tire wasn't wearing nicely and on the rotation, the tread is causing the shake, or the tire could just have had a belt slip. Timing is convenient, but could just be coincidence on whether it's something they did.

 

Always torque them. 76 lb ft.

 

If you really want to have some fun, after they check it over and say everything is good ask to see the calibration certification for the torque wrench they used. You have every right, and it makes the point that there are educated people out there who will keep them honest.

 

Is that right? I'm open to other possibilities but since the truck rides fine and I only get the shake when I tap the brakes above 60 mph I sort of ruled out something wrong with the wheel or tire. I'm not a big believer in coincidence but ...
