So, I just had the worst night trying to change my oil last night. For some idiot reason, I slid under the truck and went "oh here we go" and took out the plug on the transmission fluid pan. It took me a second (or few seconds) before I realized "boy, that looks awfully red, and smells awfully like transmission fluid" and popped the plug back in. Ugh, I don't know what I was thinking. To top it all off I've got the stuck filter issue as well (someone, not me, put it on dry).

So now my transmission fluid is low, what should I do? Should I drain out the rest and refill it? Should I just top it off, will it be a problem if the new oil is different?

It's a 2000 4x4 automatic, with a 5VZ-FE engine with whatever transmission would make sense for that. About 85k miles on it.

Would really appreciate some help, I have 1000 miles to do this weekend.

Just drain and refill. For the oil filter get some channel locks or stab a screw driver through it and turn

Just make sure and get some Dexron III automatic transmission fluid and top it off where your transmission dipstick is at. Shift through all the gears with it running, and fill to hot level once it has run for a while.

OK the next thing I was going to ask is what fluid, so sounds like Dextron III is a good bet. Thanks guys. I'll see if I can borrow a claw from somebody to deal with that filter.

You warmed the truck before trying to remove the oil? filter?

Sometimes, cranking it down a bit tighter when warm,,or just putting heavy pressure on it that way, will allow it to loosen when you reverse the rotation on it.

Mine cinch down really tight as well,,wet or dry seal. just have to work them back and fourth sometimes,,and they always come loose with a filter wrench that I treated with Tool Dip.;)

I haven't tried doing it warm. Part of the frustration is that I've already been through 2 different filter wrenches that I thought should work, but didn't.

Where is the proper place to put the transmission fluid back in?

You refill the transmission by putting the fluid down the tube that your dipstick is in. Your transmission dipstick... not Oil dipstick. Good idea to have a small funnel. Even better a small funnel with a plastic hose attached to it.
Don't lose the hose down the tube.
