I installed an AFE CAI a couple of days ago. I bought it right so figured WTF try it, can always take it off. The metal box/shield didn't fit and had to be ground some, the holes in the thing didn't match so I had to re-drill and the vacuum hose connection fitting was wrong so I bought the right one at Checkers. What should have been a 45 minute install took a few hours. Major PIA!!

My son has one on a F-150 and says it's improved his MPG considerably. He doesn't like the noise so he drives more careful to avoid revving it :).

I dont believe anything is "Bulletproof" against sucking up water except maybe a snorkel.... Volant has an attachment that connecst to their intake system to suck air from the bottom of the vehicle of all places. I dont ever hear anyone say anything about that. I would be more worried about that.

I read that same story on ToyotaNation and i'm not to sure the author of that story knew what he was talking about. He claimed his engine sucked up water because his exhaust was leaking water,:D Anyways I think any after market intake system can encounter an extreme case and suck up water but its highly unlikely. Tacomas stand pretty high off the ground and you really don't get alot of water splashing up to the grill and in to the radiator...

actually it sucks air in from the very top opening in the front grille on tacomas.

If thats the case then it faces the same problems the URD intake is getting flamed for pretty often. But Volant does make a an attachment that scoops from the bottom.

im not too familiar with my engine, but i heard that you have to be careful with CAI because you can get water in them? do i need to be careful?... and also will getting this have any effect on future upgrades like installing an exhaust system or does it have no effect on limiting my upgrades?

You should not go mudding or do deep water crossing if you go with the URD intake, which is mounted behind the grill. All the other CAI have a mounting similar to the stock air filter, so you don't have to be especially careful, but I still would go through water over the bottom of your door. (I love my truck too much to risk screwing it up.)

Also, the automatics have some sort of vent that might let water in. I don't know the details, but someone else here could help.

    Really.

If you had a manual, you wouldn't have a foot free to kick yourself.

The auto gets better gas mileage and accelerates faster. I made the right decision.

I don't know about faster, but the autos have a different OD gear so they run lower RPMs than the manuals at highway speed.

As for the vent.... I dunno... But I do know you need to relocate the breather valve on the rear differential regardless of tranny if you want to do water crossings without sucking water into the gear oil. I have a DIY in the thread in my sig for it. Less than $10 worth of parts IIRC.

Maybe that was it. I don't drive through water, so my brain turned off when I was reading about it.

From what I though I knew the manuals have more HP? Like 10 or so...

0-60 The manual should be able to take the auto right....?

From what I know, all stock 1gr engines produce the same HP.

lsocoee, have you had any problems with water getting into your intake. I'm on the fence and the water issues are what keeps me from going ahead and buying the URD. If you have no problems in New Orleans then I will definately be ok were I'm at.

    Don't know about that.

I run a drycharger with mine that supposedly helps keep the filter dry. Prior to that, I didn't have any issues. My truck starts up normal every time. I don't offroad much. I've been to the spillway a few times, but not in the past couple weeks. If I did any water crossings, then I wouldn't get it.
