I got the v6 auto trans, with atrac, rr electric locker. Like to know if this is good setup for deep sand, mud, hills. What is the best way to use if coming up on nasty looking mud or sand while cruising the back roads. I used to have a 2004 chevy Silverado 4wd and would just put in 4 hi and hope for the best. Pretty simple.

Hi Jim... see the links in my signature for details on the traction systems. A-TRAC makes the truck pretty much unstoppable.

Here are some notes to help:

Deep Sand: H4 + TRAC OFF (pre 2012 is TRAC ON), possibly need to deflate tires to ~15 psi.
    Deep Mud: L4 + A-TRAC
    Steep Hills: L4 + A-TRAC
Most dirt road conditions: H4 and press briefly the VSC button for TRAC OFF MODE (this is traction control ON with engine regulation turned OFF).

Rear locker for emergency and pulling others with A-TRAC ON. Play around with the 10 drive mode choices and learn how they work best.

TRAC (Traction control) is limited slip using the brake system to slow wheel spin. Regular TRAC ON has engine output regulation to help prevent over-revving and spinning of tires. TRAC helps you begin to drive away from or drive through a slippery condition that might cause one tire to spin.

TRAC OFF (also called AUTO LSD in H2) has no regulation for maximum power to tires with traction. A quick press of the VSC OFF button moving or stopped activates TRAC OFF/AUTO LSD.

Since 2012, H4 drive mode is normally with engine regulation and called TRAC. Before 2012 TRAC in H4 had no regulation... that now called TRAC OFF.

To turn off the traction control, stop moving, press and hold in the VSC button for a few seconds until the VSC OFF light comes on. VSC is Vehicle Stability Control and keeps you driving in the direction you intend.

The VSC (and TRAC) will come back on automatically if you drive dangerously, or restart your truck.
