the first truck was awesome! second one was ok.

buying new, you lose money, no matter what. your paying for knowing that you are going to be the reason it breaks

buying used, driving it another 30k miles wont really hurt the resale value much if any. if it breaks, it must have been the p.o's fault.

truck is worth what you will pay for it. I would play the single cab thing to your advantage, esp at dealership. "well, im not really looking for a single cab, but I guess I could make it work, but this price is what I was wanting to pay for a double-cab"

I got raped on my used truck, but it hasn't given a single problem so maybe I wasn't. . . . .hard to quantify what my truck is worth to YOU GUYS, but I know to me, its worth what I pay, plus interest.

that is the only mindset you can have and be happy with your purchase

If you have never owned a brand new vehicle, then this might be the time.
Everyone has to buy one just once in their life time.

Also, how long are you planning to keep the truck?
If your planning on 10 years, then the cost difference between new and slightly used is minimal when you divide the cost over 10 years.

    Yeah.
I put 2 125cc and one 50cc dirt bike in the back of my '92 4-banger and carried 3 of us in the cab. It was fine for the ride out to the washes. Also pulled a 17-foot boat to the lake every weekend for a while.

I love the regular cabs, and if it was a 3rd vehicle, a reg cab 4x4 is probably what I would have. I have trust issues, so I only buy new vehicles now that I can afford them, and the cost difference does not seem that much.

UGHH. I just can't decide between new and used.. I was finally getting comfortable with new and then a regular cab SR5 showed up at the local Honda dealer..

2009 Standard cab I4, manual tranny. 83,000 miles on it. It seemed to drive fine, but there were some nicks and scratches in the paint. Interior wasn't the cleanest, but not terrible. 1 owner rig with carfax showing "maintenance inspections" every 20K miles or so.
The "asking" price was 16,800. As I was leaving the dealership telling them I was still considering a new one, they told me to offer 13,800 and the truck would be mine. WHAT DO.

    Haha. I hate making decisions!!

I realize the pics arent the greatest.

Meh lower the price to 13 even. The start nodding and hit the trails. You'll be glad you didn't buy new.

    serious, 83k= broke in.

BUY IT! mine had 75k on it when I bought, though different platform, the steering, interior, etc are the same and without the odometer, I would have assumed it new

Just FYI...Car dealers make more money on reselling used vehicles than they do on new ones. They are also going to try to get as much as they can because they are in the business to make money, not give you a good deal.

Go to Kelly's Blue Book.com or Edmunds.com and price your ideal truck there. You can also request free price quotes from several dealers via these sites.

I was looking for a new truck and went to 3 different dealers in my area. They offered $1,000 off of the sticker price.(way too high) The last place I went to, I actually gave the dealer a price that I thought was fair for a truck and he told me that he actually pays a couple hundred more than what I offered. I asked to see the invoice and caught him in a lie and promptly walked out.

I ended up getting a quote from a dealer 85 miles away that was $1,200 under anyone's price in town. It was well worth the drive.

Even though the dealer might pay say $20,000 for a particular truck ( with the MSRP being say $23,000), this doesn't mean he is only going to net $3,000 if he sells it at the MSRP. Things have gotten really shady in the auto sales world. There are all kinds of incentives and kickbacks the dealer gets after the sale to offset his original invoice purchase price.

The bottom line is, NEVER pay more than what the dealer paid on his "invoice" and NEVER EVER pay anything close to the MSRP. If after doing your research on KBB.com and Edmunds.com you can't find a local dealer that will give you a good price, then look further away like I did. I knew I had such a great deal that I didn't even bother to haggle with the guy. After all, no one around here could even come close to his price.

I might add that if you have good credit, the interest rate for a new vehicle loan will probably be substantially lower than a loan for a used vehicle. Something else to consider when figuring total cost of ownership.

Just buy a new truck. You'll love it more ;)

Looks like they peed on the floor too! Look at the paper on the floor. Its all wet. If the floor has been that wet, at best all you will have is mildew and a sour smell. It could be worse and develop into rust.

It also depends if you pay cash or finance. New car rates are 1-2% right now while you see 5% on used cars over a couple years old. 3 points will suck up the difference over 60mo. Just picked up my 2014 OR at 1.8% through a credit union.

that's a good point, with financing, newer can make more since.

variables would be how much you put down, interest-rate, and duration of loan.

I tried to buy new actually, but local dealer would absolutely not get me lower than 12%, which was a slap in the face to me and my credit (my credit at time was not bad, but not great either) however, I was not wanting to put much down, which makes getting a lower rate harder.

so, with the used truck (different dealer), I got all excited when they got me at 7%! I didn't know any better at the time and took it without much question. easy payment, not a whole lot down, and I bit. if I would have shopped around, and saved more for money down, I could have gotten a new truck for about the same as I am paying now after considering interest and such.

bottom line, like I said before, no matter what, your going to walk away with a little regret in one way or another, the key is to know you made the best decision you could at the time, and know your truck will still outlast many others because you are going to take such great care of it!

Financing % can play a big part in it all. I looked at a Super White '11 base model 4x4,nothing but A/C and a sliding rear window with 56,000 miles. They wanted $19k. Even if I got them down to $16k at @7% interest (if I did this right $19,000 after 5yrs??). I got '14 same color and (lack of) options, lol, with 0 miles for $22,700 @ 2.3% interest (25,700 after 5 yrs) . Thats with no trade-in or down payment. Not that much of gap for a new truck with full warranty, and new car smell :D You can probably get a better rate than I did too.

Thanks again everyone for the input. I decided to go with a new one and I waited around for the exact truck I was looking for to show up in the area (well, close enough). Drove 200 miles east on the motorcycle, loaded it up, and drove home in my new Taco!! :)

Great community, here. I'm excited to be a part of it. Thanks again!
