Is it worth buying a locker?

I just bought a 14 DCLB TRD Sport, Just sold my beloved 07 in the same truck, except my 14 has some trac system vs, my LSD my 07 had that worked flawlessly. Oh how I wish that same LSD and system was in my 14, or am I seeing how it works right. Am I missing something with this new system. I have installed an OLM 3" lift with Moto Metal 955 Chrome wheels turning BFG mud terrain tires in the 255/75/17. I will happily install an ARB for the rear if this new system needs it but does it? My dash does not say A-Trac just Trac and you can get the Auto LSD to show also. Point is with my 07 I went everywhere I ever wanted to go. Dont do MOAB except on my wheeler. Is it worth the 2K for a ARB installed? I am brand new to this forum but have been reading a while and decided to post. Thanks for all of your help in advance

 

Welcome to the forum. Your use will determine if you need a locker. Are you 4x4? We also have a preruner OR that has gotten stuck in mud and locker did not help it out.

I spend a lot of time by myself offroading. every season. If the new system works comparably to my old LSD then I'm probably ok. If thats questionable then I will go for the ARB locker. My 07 had a warn winch with an ARB bumper making me feel much more confident in where I went, just never needed it for me just others from time to time. Debating on the Bumper and winch combo again also.
To really answer my question I would say YES, I need a locker for what I do with the truck. My old LSD acted just like one. Thats what Im used to. So if I need a locker, will the new system work as well as the old 07 LSD? Sorry if it seems like I have talked myself in a circle but this new system confuses me, when the old one just worked.

 

I'm confused hunter. You said in your post you got a '14 TRD Sport, but your signature show's TRD Off Road. If you have the Off Road, then you already have a locker.

 

It is the TRD SPORT. If it has Off Road, that is wrong, I will fix that. My bad.

Good investment if you do any offroading, and the fact that the ARB's are selectable make them great. It's on when you want it, off when you don't.

 

I am surprised you did not buy the off road package, it seems like the perfect truck for you. I much prefer a locker over a fake hood scoop. I also sometimes like to do a little off roading by myself and I am so thankful I have A-TRAC and a locker.

 

I bought the same one as I originally had, just was unaware of the changes in the LSD to trac system. I love the hood scoop!!! I just thought my TRD sport was the same. I need the LB. Yes its a 4x4

 

I have an SR5 and have wheeled it numerous time with the LSD. After 3 years I am finally getting the locker put in. Here is what I found...

LSD gets through most things but may be more work and is harder on the truck.
LSD also pretty much is useless once a wheel lifts off the ground. Driving a stick makes the "poor man's locker" really tough...
LSD is nice in the snow too..



For me.. I got a used ARB and I will still be spending about 1100 with the HO compressor. 2000 would have made me put it off another 2 years.

 

I have an older tacoma with no a track or LSD. However, I do have a locker which I'm surprised by the number if times it's been useful. Like it's been said if you get one wheel off the ground it's like a magic button.

 

This isn't hard. Wait and see if you need it, then install one if it turns out you do.

 

winch! i say this since you mention that you get out alone often, i do also and a winch is on the list for my new truck. soon as you get into 4LO the electric crap shuts off and does nothing, welcome to open diff driving..

 

I sub'ed this thread just because this truck that I just bought has more to offer than any other truck (or my Jeep) I've ever owned. So I'm still trying to figure out the differences/needs/uses for my Traction Control (Off switch), my A-TRAC, and my locking rear diff.

Basically sub'ed just to learn from you guys... ya know, the ones that know what you're talking about and all... lol.

Not trying to state the obvious or be demeaning, but I recently used the search feature on TW for "ATRAC explained" and thee were multiple well written threads attempting to explain all the different configurations and functions. I'm constantly learning as well.

 

No worries man... I was going to search that, and read my manual too. Just haven't had the chance to yet. I only mentioned it, since it was already brought up. S'all good.

 

The winch is going on for sure. Agreed, it is a great thing to have when you need it. I am just waiting for US OFF ROAD to get their bumper made and into production. Anyone know when it will be ready for the 14 model?

 

If you do decide that you need a locker, might as well change your gears but the only downfall is gotta do the front as well.

 

I'd only worry about regearing if he plans on going with anything bigger than a 33" tire...

 

OP, we have the same dilemma. I also go off road alone. I got the sport only because I needed the long bed and wanted the double cab (NA with an Off Road). I'm actually I am little surprised how well the fake limited slip works. A winch is on my list (I've been waiting on US Offroad as well), and I hope it's all I need. ARB is something I'll look into only if I need it later.
