Stop losing sleep .... I went through the same gyrations you did ... I'm very cost conscious and hate to let go of a buck unless I'm "sure" .... I went the New route after considering the $1-3 K difference between new & used .... I'm so Happy I did !! It's been 9 months now and I still get excited to drive it anywhere .... Even to work , at the end of the work day I get excited again to drive it home !! ( everything in between is a bad blur ) Hahaha
A word of caution though ... WARNING.!!!... Don't ever look at this site once you get the truck I've added @ 5-6 K after the original purchase because of looking at this site !!
Put a Block on all PC units for Tacoma World ! : )
All the posts above give good advice , the people on here are Awesomely helpful ... I came to the conclusion that the reason they are is because they want others to go bonkers doing mods so they can justify their own insanity !! Birds of a Feather ..... Ha !!
Good luck and thanks for your service !

P.S. Don't have kids ... It will severely impact your ability to do mods !!

Space your mods out if possible. The excitement lasts longer :drevil:

Heck, I just got an ultragauge and cant wait to drive every day just to use it! And that's not even a mod! No telling how psyched I'll be when I get my lift and new tires/rims.

So go ahead and factor a few thousand in your buying price for mods... you came to the best place, but you came to the wrong place. ;)

If I had the money I would go new. For another thousand or so you get a brand new truck.

As for reliability my truck is 10 years old and I have only had an issue with AC refrigerant leaking and I had to replace my calipers when playing in the mud wrecked them.

    Wow, I'm floored, guys (gals?)...

I was not expecting this much of a response, and it seems to fit very much into what I'm used to with my photographic forum (www.pentaxforums.com), as some cherry introduces him/herself and is just overwhelmed with help and recommendations. I was not expecting the same treatment here, especially after doing pretty much the same thing (who I am and why I'm seeking advice) on the Ranger Forums. I was looking at a Ranger before moving up the price spectrum to a Taco. Well it took almost three days before getting even just one response (which was after me sarcastically saying "wow, thanks for all the help guys..."). That response? "Well it was a weird post..."

Regarding mods - I'm not too worried about that as it doesn't interest me all that much - I love the way the Taco's look in their natural state, and I don't have a need for any lifts, massive off-road tires, winches, etc. But famous last words, eh? ;)

Again, thank you. You have all given me a lot of ease in correcting my misinformation (I was going purely off KBB and nothing else), and now I have the facts I need to make an informed decision about abandoning this specific vehicle or offering a lower price, and why.

Just out of curiosity, would 27k be reasonable for the rig in question, *if* I could swing it, or would you still push for new?

    Much obliged,
    Heie

$27K would be a great price but I didn't think your $28.5K price was bad either. If it were me and I thought a Tacoma would fit my needs I'd buy the truck you described in a hearbeat. I'd be more concerned with someone buying it out from under me. Clean, low mileage, and reasonably priced Tacoma's are not always easy to find.

I'm on my second Tacoma. Looking back, as much as I like the 2014, there was not a lot of difference between it and my 2007. I would not be concerned about differences between a 2013 and a 2014. It's a great truck at a fair price. It's low mileage, under warranty, and clean. If it's got the equipment you want and you can live with the color, buy it. You won't be sorry.

For what it's worth, and I think you've already heard this message from others, 150K miles and up to 10 years from now might be a bit much to be thinking about $20K if you were to sell it. I drove my 2007 for 7 years and put 100K miles on it. I traded it for $17K. A private party sale would have gotten me $18K to $19K. I don't think I would have had a prayer of selling in that price range if the truck had 150K miles. Also, at 100K miles the truck looked and drove like new.

Even at $27 I would push for new. You prob keep some of the difference in resale of a new taco being a one owner vehicle.

In the end, don't be penny smart and dollar dumb...and do what makes you happy..

Ohh, and I said the same about not modding my 2011...:boink:

^^^What Saf (saf023) and Opponet (AWorthyOpponent) both said. You're not gonna go wrong with a Tacoma, used or new. Get what makes you happy while not getting taken to the cleaners. I'd go new, but that's my personal opinion. $27K for the rig in your OP is still a good deal, especially if you take care of your vehicle and intend on keeping her for the long haul. :)

KBB has my truck listed as 13,500 and I have seen my year model with 50K more miles go for way more than that. I'd die before I sold a Tacoma for KBB value! And like we said, TW is a great forum and is not dying anytime soon.

I agree with everyone else, buy new. Consider this, once you buy the truck, the money is gone. If you buy that used one, though it seems nice, will you kick yourself for not buying new? I was always told that if I was buying a vehicle to get all the packages and goodies I wanted because when that bill comes in (Not that you will have a bill if paying cash) you will curse it if you are not in LOVE with the car. And though you may love what you bought, your mind will wander to what else you could have. I think that could still be applied to paying cash.

Be careful though, some things the dealer will charge way too much for that you can do yourself or have done for cheaper. I say get a 4x4 sport with all the goodies!

Yeah, this forum is awesome and a very helpful bunch of folks.....most of the time. A lot of people get sick of seeing the same questions about tires and lifts and so on being asked so I just advise using the search option before starting any new threads. Good luck on your decision. I still say go new. The extra money will pay off in the long run.

If you're wondering if it's the right vehicle for the long haul, that depends on you and what you want to do with it. The mileage isn't as great as some newer pickups with the latest and greatest, you won't be hauling your trailer of Budweiser Clydesdales over a mountain pass with it, and it might not keep up with whatever Jeep's premium offroad package is without some aftermarket goodies, but for most people it can do more than they'll ever need and go more places than they'll ever ask of it. I got one because it seems like the most reliable truck out there, Toyota stands behind their products in a big way, and specifically because it hasn't had any major changes in 9 years.

I like the latest and greatest high tech electronic toys, but not permanently embedded in the truck I want to drive for the next two decades, thank you very much. How many vehicles from the late 90's are still out there going strong? Wouldn't it be just awesome if they'd all been built with Palm Pilot docks, CF card slots, and Firewire ports?

I would say buy it if you want it.
Just be sure to check it out good, some owners make many mods to these trucks.
Some of these mods turn out bad and can really cause problems so they just unload the truck.

The price is too high! I paid $30,700 for my 2014 off the lot with 19 miles on it.

Appreciate all the help guys - made an offer and was turned down. Admittedly, it was a bit on the low side, but I found the exact same rig except 4x4 (everything else was the same), in the same year with the same mileage, for $23.5k. 4WD isn't worth $4k or more extra., especially to me.

Again, thank you for the help - I am much wiser as to what the Taco market commands because of you.

If buying from a Dealer, always go armed with Cost Data from Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds, and buy on the last day of the month. They want to deal and get that last sale in to affect their monthly bonus.

Specs please? You said 4x4 wasn't worth 4K more but you said you bought a 4x4?

I didn't buy one. I was fixated on the 4x4, but was using the other car (exact same specs minus the 4x4) as leverage for why my offer was not a lowball.

    The 4x4 walked.
