Going again this fall or winter?

 

Nope, we just moved and that has consumed us this summer. We did a 3 day trip over Memorial Day weekend (trip report posted here) to Shell Island (south of San Felipe)... and have no plans for another trip, although I would love to go today, if I could... Baja is just so awesome that it never ceases to amaze and entertain me.

Summer is fast approaching... and Baja is calling my name!!! Anyone else have 'Baja Fever'???

 

JUST finished talking with my wife about doing a trip in Aug. Came up with the idea about 4 hours ago.

Of course (unless you stick to the Pacific Coast) August is the hottest and most humid month in Baja... specially once you are over 200 miles south of the border or on the gulf side. It is also hurricane season, so keep an eye out on the weather forecasts. Hurricanes in Baja usually mean lots of rain and that can wash out roads.

 

Hey David, Back on July 4th 2011, my wife and I and another couple took a private plain down to Baja.

Me as copilot flying into Baja.


We landed in Punta San Francisquito on that little dirt air strip and had a couple of fish Taco's. We were there only for about two hours and then took off for Mulege.It was really hot there and I had on the wrong shirt.

Then we landed at the air strip in Mulege next to the hotel Serenidad and stayed there for the night, but first we were paid a visit by the Federalies. No issues though.




We took a cab into Mulege but then walked back along that river that dumps into the Sea of Cortez.

We found this little bar called Jungla Jims. It used to be called Jungle Jims before the fire and floods took it out. Neat little place.


Back at the hotel we were greeted with a big pig roast and a very lively party. had a great time there.


After that we flew to Cabo and stayed here for three days. This was the view from our room.

Yeah, it was a blast flying in that plane. Mine is a Cessna B210H turbo. That one is a lot nicer than mine.

Sweet set of wings! There is a thread on Baja Nomad now (from Capt. Mike) about how the closing of so many dirt strips is really making any flying to Baja very limited, and becoming a thing of the past. The strips are closing because they all must pay a high fee so the military can inspect planes for drug hauling... or because there are so few pilots flying to Baja for vacations... high fees, high fuel, stolen planes, etc. The days of the Baja Bush Pilots and Arnold Senterfitt group trips may be gone forever?

Glad you like it... Baja is a wonderful and unique world destination and it can't get any closer to the United States than it already is, hanging onto California and dipping into the Pacific Ocean!

Yeah well if anything, it might be next year. Doing a UT trip for a week (ending at Rock Therapy in Moab), and I might take a break from that annual trip next year to do this Baja trip. Your pictures look awesome.

I've heard about shady shit happening in Mexico (mostly Mexico City though), but I also heard a little about Rosarita and other parts of Cabo. Any info on that? (Sorry if you already mentioned it in your report. I haven't read through it all yet)

 

Well, I am a camper and four wheeler, so hanging around cities (Rosarito Beach, Tijuana, Ensenada, Cabo, etc.) is not why I go to Baja... But, when I am in those cities, I find only good food and friendly people... If you go looking for problems or expect problems, that is what you may get... SAME here in the U.S., right?

Use a smile, it will take you far in Mexico...

I cannot guarantee something bad won't happen, but in 50 yeas of Baja travels, it hasn't to me. Bad stuff happens right here in California, everyday, but do I still go outdoors, sure...

A local TV channel sports announcer was just shot 10 times while in his car, in his driveway by a guy he hired to paint his house a few months ago... SAN DIEGO, CA ... not Mexico.

Yes it's horrible. Don't go. I have so enjoyed the fact that typical tourism slowed down over the past several years. Less annoying gringos (yes I am one of those) = more Baja for me. Of course I am just being shellfish . I do realize this has created a real hardship on our amigos in Baja, so go. I guess...
