with the super charger it's required, 91 minimum - but it will most certainly NOT hurt to use it without one. It's also not necessary and as far as I know the truck doesn't benefit at all from higher quality fuel other than perhaps burning slightly cleaner.

OK thank you so much I heard you get more mileage as well if you use premium well either way just as long it doesn't hurt the engine I'm OK

I find the best results for both power and gas mileage with 89 octane. I was running 93 and I started hearing a bit of knock. I went to 87, then noticed I was downshifting (automatic) on the thruway with the cruise control and A/C on and I got crap mileage (275 miles per tank). I switched to 89. I get about 325-350 miles per tank and the power seems pretty good. No downshifting on the thruway. Hope this helps!

I use 87 and 93. Been getting almost 22 mpg with 93. It runs fine on either one.

Negative on the better gas mileage, but you won't get any ping with the mid-grade/premium. Ran my own lil two experiment with regular vs premium and now run mid-grade (premium if I'm towing).

My truck runs best when I mix 89 and 93. Most engines are set up to run on 89 so going to 93 usually hurts performance. Mid grade would be the best but it sits longer because so few people use it, so sometimes it runs the worst with mid grade...

So on a stock motor mixing 89 and 93 will most times, get the best results.

If you are towing, racing, or add a SC than I would run 93.

Huh? I would argue most engines are designed to run on 87.

Secondly, midgrade is a mix of premium and regular at the station so it doesn't just sit there. If regular or premium were to run out, midgrade would be out too.

I have always used 87 on my 2005 4-cylinder.... never a problem. But after reading posts here, I might try the 89 to see if that changes my mileage at all....

True but if you're getting the pinging or knocking that's a reason to go up a grade.

Always used 87 in my 4 banger. 22-23mpg in winter, 24-25 in summer.

Higher octane prevents gas from exploding due to the heat of compression in high compression engines.

Knock is when you get premature ignition in the cylinder, and when this happens, much energy is lost as the engine has to compress *through* the initial explosion and gas expansion.

So, unless you have knock, you don't need high octane.

If you're seeing MPG differences among 87 vs 91 it's more likely that one has more ethanol than the other. If you see one with 10% ethanol and one without, and they're the same price, then get the one without. Otherwise just get whatever's cheaper.

Just don't put E85 in, that's not remotely the same thing as 85 octane and these engines aren't designed to run on it.

I have run 93 an 89 NE in mine. I get better mileage with NE period. I have been running 93NE because that is all that is close to me. I have seen a best of 23.8 so far with 5500 miles on the truck. But that is all freeway at 65-70 mph. I average between 21-23 most of the time.

Octane is just a measure of gasoline's anti-knock properties. All grades of gasoline burn at the same temperature.
