Is the 6 speed really that bad?

The previous owner of my truck managed to destroy the trans in ~40,000 miles.
Replaced with a brand new trans by dealer and traded in shortly after.

So the transmission in my truck has ~7,000 miles on it.

    1st gear whines
    TOB clatters
    Clutch pedal is wobbly
    And the stupid RPM lag.

I really wanted an automatic, but I wanted a 5 lug truck with the 4.0. So the only choice was the X.
Test drove a 5 lug, 4 banger access cab with an auto. It felt like I was driving my refrigerator around. BORING and very much underpowered.

I have gotten a minium of 200,000 miles out of the manual transmissions in 4 out of the last 5 toyota trucks I have owned. (3 pretacos, 2 1st gen tacomas).
Somehow I don't see the 6 speed as being able to last anywhere near that long.

So I guess you could put me down in the "conflicted" camp when it comes to the 6 speed. I like the idea of it and it isn't utterly horrible. I just think it could be so much better.

ETA: Planning on the TRD shifter and Redline fluid change to see if that offers any improvement.
ETA2: What manual trans does the 4 cyl 5 lug truck get? Same 6 speed as the X and 4x4s or they have a 5 speed?

Not missing much, some redneck chick whining about her inability to produce quality sammiches and some Schwarzenegger.
