Easy oil change.

Just changed the oil in my 2010 Double Cab for the first time. It was the easiest oil change ever, the filter on top of the engine is amazing! The drain plug is easy to reach. Done in ten minutes, Just another reason to love my Tacoma!

Not to mention that awesome spill catcher around the filter. Catches all of the oil that runs out of the filter, holds it, and can easily be drained by removing the litle plug on the bottom.

 

Protip.... remove the lil plug and put a bottle underneath the oil filter catch BEFORE removing the oil filter... even less of a mess.

 

I used an empty coffee cup!

 

Yep, works like a charm. I use whatever type of empty bottle I can find.

My only gripe with the filter location is that you can't fill the new one before installing it. It's probably not a bid deal anymore, but a habit I got into years ago when filters were large, mounted upright and vertical. You could remove them without spilling a drop and fill the new ones before installing them so your engine never turned a rotation without oil pressure. I still fill the Tacoma filters about 1/3rd and can get them in place and spun on without any leaking out.

 

Exactly. Add a bit of cream and sugar and you've got the best flavoured double/double out there.

No more wrenches, just a flip of the lever. I've been using them on all my vehicles for years.

One of the oil change tutorials I saw mentioned adding a fuel line hose to the bottom of that oil filter shield drain thingy. So I put one of those in and used hose clamps and stainless steel zip ties to route it down to my skid plate and I just leave it there permanently now.

That Fumoto valve looks pretty slick, might have to get one of those...

Fumoto valve makes it even easier...don't even need a wrench to change your oil anymore.

 

I think it was McDonald's. Do you think a Tims cup would work better?

 

Problem i see with an extended line off the oil filter catch is it dripping excess oil afterwards.... these are toyotas they dont leak like american made cars.

Also never liked the idea of the fumoto valve.... looks like an accident waiting to happen.

 

+1 on the fumoto valve. Been on my tacoma 3 years and one on wifes camry since 2002. Never had a problem with either one. They have a safety clip that goes on them. Some people like them and some dont. What ever you feel comfortable with.

 

Do you have the valve with the nipple?

 

Neither one of mine has the nipple.

 

"Old" engineering indeed. Toyota changed the filter to the cartridge type and relocated it to bottom of the engine for dual-VVTi 1GR-FE engines. This is what you need to remove just to get to the filter housing on 2010+ 4Runners:
