I'm on the fence on getting a 2.7 with lower miles or getting the 3.4 and shelling out more for something with more miles. I'm on somewhat tight of a budget around 10k I have little experience with either engines and know they are both good engines. My drive is 6% grade for about 10 miles 2% in others about 25 miles total climbing colorado mountains. I'm not going to tow and will do done off road. I have a 22r that will do about 45 50 up the grades full throttle and was wondering if the 2.7 would do better. I'm not very cinders with mpg figuring coming down I get to coast . But my main question is can the 2.7 preform around 55mph on grades. I'd rather have something with 100k miles then pay the same for a 3.4 that gas 250k. either way I could supercharge the little 2.7 if low enough miles if it isn't the way I like it
    Thanks for any advice

My reg cab with about 235/85 r16s and 4.56 does fine at 5-7% grades in Oregon, up to about 5000-6000', it starts to wimp out with the lack of air higher or steeper grades. I feel I needed a faster truck id consider the 4.0 or something like a supercharged motor which handles high altitude better.

2.7L, its no dog! but it has its limits.

Yeah I'm looking at a 2.7 180000k miles and only 3800 it's a 95 our grades are around 8000 feet but I could help it with throw a cold air on it do you guys think it could handle a 4 psi trd charger on it from what ive herd there a simple rebuild and easy to work on

I agree... Given the two options you gave i would go with the 2.7L 4 banger. It has lower miles and sorta fits what your going to use the truck for. It has the same HP output as the older 3.0L six cylinder. Plus you said your not going to tow with it or modify it, if you were id say deff go for the 3.4L, both might i add are very reliable and stout engine that can take just about anything you throw at them.

I'm liking the 3.4 idea. Turbo if its an easy install, but its kind of rare for the 2.7.

p.s. its been a long time since it took anything over 7000' hehe.

I have a 96 2.7 5 speed with 456 gears and no problem pulling grades. The engine has 282,000 and still original timing CHAIN and still original clutch. Never had a better engine when it comes to maintenance. Gearing matters for sure. My last truck same setup with 358 gears struggled much more pulling grades. Never had 3.4 so can't comment. Although they have timing belts you can't take a chance on. At least 1st gen. Oh my truck is reg cab also.

They make a TRD supercharger for the 3.4 not the 2.7, well not from TRD anyway.

That's what I said. They just don't make one from TRD. And if you do go with the 2.7 LC engineering makes a equal length long tube header that will give you some low end toque that will help with those hills.

    Colorado grades.

    no towing, light wheeling?.

what are your altitude changes? any idea?

S/C or Turbo a low mile 2.7. For $10K you could make that happen with intercooling. Zinging along getting good mileage,,if you do the background work.

    Freeway kicking,,turbo it.

    More offroading,,Super it.
