for everyone that has a cb radio, how much antenna wire did you all use if mounted right behind the cab on the left?

 

I used an 18' cable, I remember reading something about that length works best with my antenna.

 

I have a 16' cable and I still have plenty cable left and my antenna is mounted by the tailgate on the driver side

About the length:*This is a testy subject with many engineering types. They have argued with us on many occasions regarding this matter. They say that if your system is set-up properly that the length of the coax is irrelevant. We agree! However, mobile installations have so many variables that a perfect set-up is the exception, not the rule. One guy has a pick-up and another has a fiberglass motorhome. One wants the antenna on the bumper, another on the hood and a third on the roof. Few people want to drill holes in their vehicle so quality grounds are always a consideration. Because of the imperfect world, we almost always recommend 18' (5.5m) when our products are used. We do so with good reason too! At 18' the voltage curve has dropped back to the zero voltage point where the cable meets the antenna which reduces the reactance within the cable itself (a null cable if you would). It has been our experience that if the antenna location makes it somewhat out of sync with its surroundings, cable lengths that are not multiples of our 18' suggestion adds to the problem. To that, our complaining experts say, "Then the antenna should be moved!" to which we say, "You tell the guy with the $30,000 vehicle that he must drill a hole in his roof so he can use a 9' cable". We solve problems in the best way we can given the boundaries that the customer establishes.

On that note, when you have 18' of coax going to a radio that is only 8' away, what should you do with the other 10'? We recommend that you serpentine it like a skein of yarn so that it is 10-14" long and tie it in the center with a wire tie then tuck it away. Do not roll it up in a tight circle as this can cause it to act like an RF choke, which often times will cause system problems.

 

I used a 12' cable and have no slack. Also have a 1.06 swr on 1

Axle seal on both sides. Ive seen some people say that you have to replace the shoes if you blow out a seal, is that true? I really dont want to since they are only 4 months old

 

I didn't replace mine when my seals went, same deal they were new, I just used a lot of brake cleaner on them, and when I checked them not to long ago they looked good and dry. Then I had the brake cylinder go on me and I just cleaned that side up good again.

 

Cool. I just came back from the store with some fluid and 4 cans or cleaner how long did it take you to do 1 side? And what did you press the seal in with?

 

I just pulled the old seal, used a 2x4 to placed against the new seal and tapped it in slowly with a rubber mallet till it was seated. Just make sure it goes in evenly. It's about an hour a side first go round.

 

Ha yeah. We aren't really that close. I only see him like once a year and I can't even get him to go camping with me must less hunting

Thats what I was figuring. Did you freeze the seal first to srink it a little? And now some guy on 1st gen thread is saying I have to replace the wheel bearings because the oil washed out all the grease from the bearing. But I feel like all the water ive been in would have already taken care of that. Haha

 

Did mine 2 years ago no problem with bearings at all so far

 

Well ive been driving around like this for 2 weeks, so hopefully I don't have to do bearings. I knew I didnt have rear brakes but I didnt have the time to oull things apart until now. And now i have to make time to fix it this week.
