Typically when the seals go out it is because there is excess play in the bearings.

Is that something you'd notice by jacking it up and feeling for free play with the wheel on? Or doesn't it only take an insignificant amount of play to cause them to leak?

Mine "went" after a certain "boy" took my Taco out to "save a friend"...Mud clogs those little vents and even heavy lube likes to breathe...

That being said, we did replace my rear brakes;full hardware kit included PLU$ a drum( 32 oz ball peins can take drums apart/off ;) )

Seal puller for outbound and 2x4 block for install-seal did take a quick trip in my freezer while we took it apart....rear vent got a good cleaning also...almost put a "TrailGear vent" on but nixed the idea...

I did not replace bearing/outside seal......BUT as Jason stated ...IF you do not know why it leaks...be SMART and replace to your advantage while apart ONCE....You can read through pages & pages here of TW's that have "chased their tail$" over axle leaks...

We have a press, not sure about the charge though. But pretty much all Toyota dealers should have a press since all truck/4runner rear bearings are pressed on.

    I have a few mods
today was a very productive day, got my Ubolt flip kit, 3* shims, and bumpstops installed today and removed the rear wheel spacer (I am now spacer free....lol). must say, I am impressed with what I was able to accomplish today by myself, all the other times ive worked on my truck, someone else has been there helping...not today though :D.

didnt get to the DS spacer though, ill do that tomorrow after work. I can say...it's bearable now driving at 40 mph, the vibs are still there but a pretty good difference from what it originally was. Now just need to get the DS spacer in and prob gonna order the OME CB drop and then hopefully all the vibs will be gone :D

    my new rear setup

pinion angle looks a hell of alot better than it did before

My brother got one of his rear wheel bearing pressed in for $20 cash by a local place we go to for odds and ends. Brought him the new bearing and whole drum / axle assembly. But that was couple years ago.

I honestly think its better and worth it to just have someone else do the drum brakes. I did mine once...I dont ever want to mess with them again...way too much of a pain in the ass to disassemble and reassemble, I'll pay a tech to do them for me before I touch them again, I dont want the hassle

Yea the brakes aren't to bad, the springs and stuff make it a pain but it's really not to bad. Yea id just bring them the axle shaft drum back plate and say press in a new bearing. Should be easy for them to do and take less than an hour.

Buy all your parts 1ST ; BEFORE YOU PULL IT APART :D lessons learned...my son got schooled ;)....Shoes go one way only and E-brake needs to be assembled BEFORE you proceed...:)

HARD lesson but hard headed youngn's need attitude adjustments sometimes....

If possible only do one side at a time....never hurts to SEE whats what

For $$ sake I purchased NEW drum instead of even turning BUT it is your budget...

Just do one side at a time that way if you get lost reassembling it you can look at the other side that is still assembled.
