Transmission/Transfer case clunking normal?

Hello all. I just picked up a 2.7 4x4 Access cab. The thing has 700 miles on the clock. Ever since about 300 miles I noticed this clunk. When lurching forward, or reverse for that matter, then engaging the clutch there is a metal to metal clunk. I also hear it when in 4th or 5th doing about 50-60, letting off the gas and then getting back on it tho its not as pronounced. The sound seems to come either from the transfer case or the transmission.

I went to the dealership this morning to have it checked out. The mechanic told me that it was normal for this truck. Can anyone out there confirm that this is in-fact "normal" for this truck?

Are you in 4WD when this is occuring?

 

It happens in 4WD as well as 2WD

 

Manual transmission 4x4s I have had in the past did that upon sudden pressing of the gas (when coasting) or sudden deceleration of gas (when under throttle). Usually some slack somewhere in the drivetrain could be the transfer case chain, ring and pinion, or somewhere else. I wouldn't worry about it. Its usually more noticeable in manual gearboxes since they is no slippage when the clutch is engaged. Most often just normal mechanical noises.

EDIT: You probably noticed it after 700 miles when you started to get more comfortable with the truck. Thats when I usually notice noises.

 

It definitely puts me somewhat at ease. I've had a jeep guy tell me that his Jeep does the same thing. But I also had a guy who has a 88 toyota 4x4 with over 300k miles tell me that his tin can does not clunk. I'm not sure what to believe here.

I actually noticed the clunk at around 260 miles which is about 100 miles after I picked her up. At 700 miles its annoying the shit out of me

 

I wouldn't worry about it.

His 88 didn't do that because the transfer-case was all gears. Yours and mine have a huge chain in it. There is some slack so it wont snap. Im willing to bet, that is what you are feeling. Its just exaggerated because you have a manual transmission.
