Same topic , slightly different commentary and you can see that Di Montezemelo is talking about the sport as a whole and not just the engine spec

" Ferrari says F1 can learn from other sports that have better exploited new technology, such as smartphones and new media, to make viewing more accessible.

They added that there is a "need for a collective look at how the show can be improved", from the availability of the product, the format of the races and the weekend, as well as the focus and aim of the regulations.

Ferrari, the most high-profile and important in F1, say they are taking a "constructive" position aimed at trying to make an already good show even better.

"F1 has to be based on technical innovation, research and development," Ferrari said in a statement on their website.

"But this must all be done with sustainable costs and, above all, must be moved forward as part of a product that can put on a show.

"Because it is the show that draws in the commercial partners, the sponsors and, above all, the fans, who are the real end users of the Formula 1 product." "

Just for the sake of friendly discussion, I don't agree. Most of the money is spent on R&D, with a large portion of that on aero and wind tunnel time.
The cost of fuel and tires for a weekend is just a drop in the bucket.

If you want to save money, reduce the impact of creative aero. Look at the early 90's F1 cars. A larger portion of r&d money spent went to things other than aero.
I think if the wings and particualraly the body shape were much more basic and simple it would free up all kinds of R&D money.

Why not start a Formula E, use all the battery technology, recharging, ERS, whatever you want.

I'm not following you , you suggested open regs for more than just tires , and the aero now is more complicated than in the 90's because it's effect on the car is better understood

And 2014 F1 is nowhere near Formula E

Essentially my point is that open regs on powerplants , fuel , aero , tires etc will cost more , not less , because teams would be testing more and not less

Again, I am just intending to have a friendly discussion about things I think would add interest to the sport. I have been a fan for many years, and that my opinion has very little value. I don't want to see "spec" cars, I enjoy the technical aspect of the sport, and creative solutions to the regs.

What would you change? What is the next step or formula?

They keep saying that this new technology translates better to road cars, so lets focus on the technology road cars can use. I think that very little of the aero would transfer.

Simplify the body and tub structure, simplify the wings, and especially the aero package.

Tire tech, engine tech, computer tech, battery tech, and other things could trickle down to road cars.

I'm not saying to totally open up the regs, but to simplify the regs and somewhat the cars.

I think the current power plant package could still be used, but could be made more dynamic and exciting with a few small changes. We know they have to carry a full race fuel load, so why limit maximum delivery volume? If you run it too much you will run out. Don't you think the max fuel capacity and no refueling would manage the flow volumes on it's own?

Why are they even doing pit stops now? If they are going to carry a full fuel load, why do they even have to stop? If they could run the compounds of their choosing the teams could make strategy calls deciding on multiple sets of tires, or try for no stops. Pirelli is making tires based on what the FIA want, not totally based on performance. Say they had 4 compound choices each weekend, and no requirement to stop, that would put more strategy into it. What if pirelli were allowed to make multi compound tires, maybe they start out harder, then get softer. Maybe run a multi front and a medium rear. It could be interesting.

So what I am thinking is put more emphasis on technology that could translate to road cars, allow more strategy options, and add a few more variables to the mix. I think there would be a better chance of different teams finding the right combo for each weekend, and it would encourage teams to take strategy risks with the possibility of an advantage.

They don't have to carry a full fuel load and I don't see how making the cars slower by taking even more aero away will make the sport more appealing to the fans

I don't understand. The cars are already slower, and they don't refuel during the race.

I meant they don't have to carry the full 100kg of fuel in the regs if they don't want to , lap times are only a second or 2 down on last year's times at the same venues and your proposal to reduce aero would further slow the cars

This race is sure to have some drama given the shuffled starting grid and the inevitable accident that awaits us with the suicide pit lane entrance

    Not a bad race afterall

    Amazing first lap by Hamilton

The Sauber mechanics were lucky to not have been injured during the unsafe release of Gutierrez's car

Interesting stat : the current cars are lapping at essentially the same pace as the last race in Austria in 2003 but are using 100kg or less of fuel versus 176kg in the old cars
