That may be true; however light painting could be done with any light source... sparklers, flash lights, glow sticks. And those fancy orbs are just a bike wheel with christmas light leds on them.

If you have a camera that you can put in manual and set the exposure time, this challenge is very doable.

I do have a camera that I could (learn how to) set the exposure time.

Tried doing it with the honey moonrise on Friday night and all I came up with was something that looked like celestial vomit.

Getting the moon is harder than you would think. My first attempt at moon photography was a miserable fail. Tripod or a stable place to set the camera is an absolute must. Then just playing with the settings in manual mode, any of the auto modes will be very difficult if not impossible because the camera tries to properly expose the entire frame. You get nothing usable that way.

Start out with ISO 100 f/11 1/125 That should get you right in the ballpark. Yes, you have to use manual settings. The moon isn't a night shot, it's a daylight shot. Use a tripod and live view on your screen. Zoom the screen in and focus manually to get it in focus. Shoot at the above setting and you will get what you want.

I just looked at the moon. You may have to drop your shutter speed down some to get the reduced light of the moon right now. Maybe try 1/80 and drop from there checking exposure. Or, you could leave it and bump up your ISO till you get it or combo of both. That setting was for a normally lit moon.

Yaaaaaa I know but shell canyon/falls isn't far from the national forest line.

Yep illegal. Good reason too. We would have a nice forest fire with some of the dummies that come through here. I believe its illegal in all national forest, blm land, state land, and grasslands. It's also illegal to set them off in the city of buffalo. Unsure of sheridan...but probably. That said, we have a ton of land were you can go set off fireworks. We also have pretty loose laws regarding selling them . That's why there are so many firework stands at the borders :D.

And one more awesome note. Firefest will be in gilette in 2015 :woot:
    Also, just be glad we

And to get the shutter speed long enough to do any kind of light painting with the moon any more than a small disk is going to require one or more ND filters.
The problem then becomes the movement of the moon relative to the ground... anything tighter than 20mm or so and you only have 10-15 seconds before it is going to be a blurry streak.
