Guys I'm about to pull the trigger on buying a couple of gas cylinders. I'm in Dallas/Fort Worth so any advice from local guys would be appreciated. I found a guy selling 2 - 244cf cylinders with fresh 10 year certs. He wants 275 per bottle and he will have one filled with c25 and the other argon for me. First, from some of the prices I've seen, this doesn't sound horrible to me but I wonder if I could get a better deal. And two, will airgas even fill these for me? This guys said airgas is a pain in the ass and he takes his to praxair. Am I getting a fair price? Anyone local know some place else I should look? Thanks!

Seems a little steep in price, but what do I know. I own all my bottles, so I don't have a dog in this hunt.

As for getting them filled, it doesnt matter where you got them from first. I've recieved every brand out there over the last 30 years. You are just trading in for a full one. You will never see the original bottle again.

I set up an account with my AirGas years ago. I can remember before that, that these guys didn't want to deal with the low volume consumers. After I got the account, they treated me better.

I thought it was too high at first too but I keep seeing 125s go for the same price. I don't know, I'd like to just find a couple for 100 a piece but I've looked for a couple months and nothing is popping up.

Try calling Gasco off of Quebec st in Dallas tomorow. Seems like the price you would pay directly from them. They have the cheapest cylinders out of anywhere in the area.

    welding exhaust:

just noticed that I've got a pinhole in my Y-pipe but sense I've been thinking about getting that whole side redone it's not of immediate importance to me but it is obviously gonna push that mod forward. my question is about doing the mod myself. Looking at the pipe it seems there's enough or would only need to be a little piping added to do or I could go to the local store and get some if needed but I'm worried about just burning through such a thin metal... I've got the good 'ol harbor freight 170 amp welder and I know I'd need to set it on the lowest power settings but what're y'alls suggestions on wire, is .035 too thick?

For anything with the exhaust I suggest .023 and a bottle of 75/25. I wouldn't want to do it with .035 flux core

Well they wanted 300 dollars for a 200cf cylinder. And what's messed up is I called praxair and they told me I'll have trouble with a 244cf/K size cylinder for the rest of my life... Wtf? It seems like all these cylinder businesses have it all figured out...

I don't know the sizes of the tanks. all I know is I use the biggest portable tanks for my welding. The gas last a long time. To give you an example of how much gas you will use, I can build 18-20 of the trailers in my sig picture before switching out cans.

As I get older,I'm limiting myself to 12 of these trailers a year. I get 2 years out of these cans. Every time I switch one out, the new ones seem much heavier.

In short, if your not in the buisiness of welding for living, maybe a smaller can would make sense.

Onother option is to go in with some buddies, have one guy buy the big can and the rest buy the smaller cans. You can transfer the gas yourself with a couple of fittings and a hydraulic hose. I do this so I don't have to lift a completely full can onto the cylinder perch. One the transfer is done, I have 2, half full cans. Much easier to put a 1/2 can on the perch. There is really no good way to lift those big cans. You have to bear hug the shit out them.

Don't let the safety Natzi's hear that I do this. Some get weird about this.

I have several friends that bought cylinders off CL. They come over with a 6 pack and $20 and I transfer them the gas they need.

    Later

Is there an opportunity to fab a hydraulic jack clamping rolling fork platform dolly to move big tanks around? Maybe get OSHA to sell em for us?

Agreed. But if all you have is. 035 you can just last down tacks, I had to do it this weekend with mine. I didn't want to buy a roll if. 023 cause I hardly ever have a need, though I was using .030.

If your quick enough you can run beads I welded mine with .035 and they came out pretty clean.

Not really, they sell little ramps that work great. I'm just too lazy to fab my own. One of those "I'll get to that when I catch up" things.

Well don't have a cardiac while hugging a full bottle and say "damn.. If only I had Dragon's hydraulic clamping fork platform roll about thing". I mean the nurse will think you are nutz for one...

currently I'm not too worried about "clean" as I'm more concerned with just closing this pinhole. you think that's possible with the lowest settings on the welder and .030 wire?
