Did you make penetration in the tonneau up front like you initially planned?

Yea, hole saw, with a tube clamp just above. Lions share of silicone around the tube, well see once I can remove this tarp if it holds up to the rain.

Thanks Jason, should have it done and some other surprises for the hooters meet in July.

I dunno. I think I'm going to have to disagree, looking at what all the 2nd Gen 4WD guys are doing. Specifically, the FJ case swap/4WD computer delete. IF the IFS diff is a straight bolt-in conversion and doesn't require any fab work, then it sounds like a pretty simple conversion. Just get an FJ transmission/t-case, do the wiring changes specified in the t-case conversion mod (I'm pretty sure the 4WD wiring harness is probably present), install the switch for the ADD, also specified in the T-case mod, and all Alfuh really needs is the IFS, spindles/hubs, CVs, and driveshafts (which can probably be salvaged from a wrecked 2nd Gen 4WD) and he really hasn't spent much more than a 4WD guy that just does the t-case conversion--maybe about the same if it's a t-case conversion with a crawl box added. I'm guessing the UCA/LCAs are the same for 2 and 4WDs.

Honestly, I was thinking similarly to you guys about the 4WD conversion, but after reading what was involved with the t-case conversion, it suddenly seemed very do-able without spending an insane amount of jack to do it. Sure, it'll be expensive, but the end result will be even better than a factory 4WD thanks to the FJ case. If you consider that might be something he would want to do in the future to a 4WD, then it might even end up being a wash.

Now if they only had an ADD delete/manual hub mod for the 2nd Gens. :D

They have a manual hub kit for the 2nd gens but it's $$$$ at right around $2k.

i still don't see what the hype is over manual hubs. the actuator for ours is very reliable, and if for some reason it were to break or malfunction, it's extremely easy to pop it out real quick to manually slide the fork over. and man is it convenient to only have to turn a knob from the driver's seat to get into 4wd. then again, maybe i'm just lazy.

He could but time is money in my book and doing all that searching for parts and even having all the parts at one time seems and then all the labor or install etc. Seems like months of truck tinkering and unless he has something else as a DD I would hate to have mine in pieces trying to get it all together.

I figure after switching to an fj case why not make the front end manual too. Less chance for failure?

I just feel like even if you're making it more reliable, it's not going to be a huge change in reliability. also keep in mine that you not only have the hassle of having to get out to click into 4wd, but it may be in a dangerous situation in which you have to do so. you also have hubs out in the open now that you risk damaging on a rock or obstacle, as compared to stock hubs that are nice and recessed. there are plusses and minuses to both of course. i'm just playing devils advocate.

If youre going into a situation that requires locking the hubs you should do so before hand, not wait till youre in a dangerous situation. And my hubs are tucked back into my wheels away from any chance of damage. And my cvs never spin unless my hubs are locked which means I dont tear boots

you should definitely do so beforehand, however, conditions can change quickly, and we certainly don't live in a perfect world. I also switch back and forth a lot. i like to ride trails in 2wd, and only use 4 when i really need it. I can't comment on exactly how far out they stick on first vs second gens, but i've seen some first gens that stick out pretty far. of course it'llk greatly depend on your wheel dimensions. for the CVs, again, can't comment on 1st vs 2ng gen as i don't own a 1st, but the 3nd gen boots are pretty solid. just turned over 80k and not a single sign of fatigue, dry rot, or leaking, with all this things gone through. i just personally think it's a lot of money for not a lot of improvement.

Hmm I think he is upsidedown maybe? not sure. With added interest and fees plus what he owes on the old one not so sure getting another loan for additional money would be the smartest thing in the world. Plus being broke with a higher payment for another sooooo many years... Anyway, better to get something you can beat on, pay cash, have something in your life that is paid for and you can sink an occasional paycheck into...Then in a couple of years have your dd paid for..bingo...debt free in a couple of years with a cool old 4x4 that you have been working on for the past few years. Cmon let's not encourage our youngins to be in debt forever.
