Pretty hard to blow a 8.4 diff up without running it completely without oil. What is it doing?

Im pretty sure the TRD off road uses the previous generation 8" and all others use the 8.4". I have blown 2 e lock rear ends there pretty weak for the v6

You are correct, the TRD uses the 8.0, and it is not as strong as the 8.4. Great for a DD, but not heavy wheeling

thats more than likely because when used as an e locker the diff sees more stress than a typical open diff.

The elockers internal design makes it weaker then the 8.4 diff

Both times I was not using the locker. First time I was backing up a steep driveway. Second time my e brake got stuck on and I was trying to rock it free in 4 low. 1500 rpm ease the clutch out and boom. Not a great choice of rear axle for their off road package.

When I just it in drive I don't go any where my driveshaft spins but no action. When what ever blew there was a huge pop and throughout the day it would make the same sound just not as loud when ever I accelerated to fast.

You need a new 3rd member, not a whole axle. Stock for you truck is 3.71. With 35's I would get 4.56. East coast gear supply can help you get what you need. They'll send you a rebuilt 3rd with whatever gears you want and then you'll send them your old one. Easy day.

Only real difference is the bearing cradle caps and 8 bolts vs 10 bolts holding the ring gear to the diff.... Ring and pinion are the same size.

If your on 35's I agree here... run 4.56. Unless you live in an area with lots of hills or need your truck to do a little bit of truck work, then Id say go with the 4.88's

East Coast is amazing people, no one compares with their prices. I live in Canada, and even with shipping, duty fees and all that crap, they were still $500 cheaper then any other place i got a quote from. Win win for me!

    Nope....
Diameter is the same but Ring is different. you can not swap 8.4 into TRD axle. They are different. If you look at 8.4 its 50 % thicker than TRD one. Hence why regular diff is much stronger than TRD one.

What would be the reasoning to put a "weaker" one on the TRD? That makes no sense

Actually you can, the axle requires some modification to take the e-locker 3rd member, but it will work. Now, I don't think its a good idea. no point in putting a weaker diff in when you can get a locker for the 8.4.

Because toyota didn't want to spend the money and design a locker for the 8.4. about the only reason that makes sense.

I belive Non elockers came in 2 different gear sets. Make sure your putting in matching sets.
