Well you could look at the shots I took of the HU installed in the dash (finally installed thread). I think it looks pretty good; definitely better than how the stock one looked. I also installed an ARC Audio KS-125 amp (70 watts / ch) and Image Dynamics XS-69 component speakers (mids / tweets). Yes it would sound better with a sub in there but I need all the space in my access cab so no room for a sub. The factory speakers are really cheesy. They weigh maybe an ounce and that's not an exaggeration. I have heard that the JBL system uses the same speakers. The factory tweeters had much bigger magnets than did the 6X9's... I enjoy driving and listening to the new sound a lot and get a lot of satisfaction from doing the install myself. I think just replacing the stock radio would yield tangible benefits but it would be a lot better to lose the stock speakers as well.

BTW those ID 6X9's are sick loud...can only imagine if I had used a 150 watt amp instead of the 70 watt amp. But they shine when listening at low volume as well. It's neat to be able to hear the fingers sliding on the guitar strings for example. Sweet!

Dealership replaced the destroyed dash panel and HVAC knobs following switching out my radio yesterday. Did a good job! Gave me a loaner Prius while they did it and I was shocked at how much better the radio and sound system was in the Prius compared to the POS unit in the Taco.

Bought my 09 Tacoma July 25, drove it 2 weeks, same problems as every one else......................Called my dealer and without question they put me thru to the girl in service in charge of documentation and radio ordering, she took info and told me about 5-6 weeks on the replacement.

    Glad I found this forum!!!

It's been about 2 months since I first reported the problem to the dealership and still no phone call. I finally got around to installing the Kenwood HU.

Not sure how the dealership is going to react when the new radio finally arrives.

Just walk in with the old radio and swap it ?

I agree... that does look nice. Would probably look GREAT in my all-black dash. HERE'S his thread if anyone else is curious.

Doubt they will let you just hand swap the radios out. For warranty purposes, they will need to verify that the new radio is installed and working.

They can just stock the radio if you do not pick it up. Happens all the time at most parts departments.

I don't plan on using the dealership for service too much, so I guess I can forget about making friends in the service department. Any advice on the brand of liquor that the babe in the parts department favours ?

All our parts "babes" are dudes, so I do not know their liquor preference. Of course Shiner Bock is a local favorite beer that may get favor. :D

Stuff like this does not phase my dealers parts department. I watch a custom order TRD wheels get refused by a customer and the parts department did not even blink about keeping the in stock for the next customer. With the 09 radios being crap, I doubt it will not sit on a shelf long.

Dealer just ordered the second replacement yesterday. If this third one has problems I'm going to ask for an aftermarket stereo. I'm not sure they will go for that.....but this is getting to be a pain in the tail.

ha, I bought the truck 3 weeks ago and it turned itself on during the test drive. I thought it was a freak thing but now I have a new radio coming.

I asked the service manager what the deal is - if the new radio is going to be the same POS?

He explained that they are removing crap radios, sending them back to the manufacturer, manufacturer is "fixing" them, sending them back to toyota. so according to him when you get a "new" radio you're actually getting one that someone, somewhere else in the country, had problems with, and the manufacturer tried to fix.

this would explain why some people on here are getting repeat offenders.

haha yea, i said to the guy "i've been looking around on a web site with people complaining that it still sucks after they get a new one, how can you assure this won't happen"

he goes "well since i'm not the one repairing the radio I cannot assure you of anything".

I'm thinking if it happens again I'm just going to wait for whatever radio they are putting in the '10 models and hope it's a fixed model.

Glad to see I am not the only one who has had problems with the radio. After 2 months on back order, it is being replaced...

Maybe the new one will work...

I recently got called by my dealership that they have my replacement. It'll be nice to be able to drive down the road and not have to listen to my radio go on and off approximately 30 times in a minute.

Well, it's official... my replacement is now WORSE than the original it replaced. The volume control has stopped working several times (did it yesterday morning & finally gave it a good whack on the dash to get it to work again after turning it on & off repeatedly didn't work) - and today it just turned itself completely off. The original never did that... just had the volume control problem - and the backlight would go out sometimes. At least this one lasted a couple of months with no problems rather than ONE DAY like the original.

Not sure what I'm going to do. After my Toyota dealership butchered (and later replaced) the bezel around the radio getting the original out, I'm not letting them touch it again. Maybe I should try another dealership. Maybe I should complain to the regional rep first. Maybe I should try to get a cash allowance instead or another replacement and just buy an aftermarket unit (and do that anyway WHEN they refuse the allowance).

Grrrr... this really pi$$es me off. Very lame, Toyota.
