hey guys, I just started getting ready to reload .223, whenever I put a mid range load of powder (using varget or IMR 4064, which are the only rifle powder I have), the powder is filling up the case completely (26 grains with varget and 25 with 4064). I am loading a hornady 55 gr v max.

I have been loading .45 acp and .45 colt, both of which I don't come anywhere near filling, so I'm not used to seeing that. I'm wondering if my scale is off. Any thoughts?

Different cases will have different volumes. But check your scale batteries. Try a smaller diameter drop tube also, it will help 'stack, the grains tighter.

CE - if you mean you are full into the neck and have compressed loads, I'd definitely double check your scale. If you just mean that most of the case is full, that's normal. My normal plinking recipe is something around 25 grains of TAC under a 55 gr soft point and the case is pretty full but it's not a compressed load.

It's not quite compressed but it is damn close, I've been doing some googling and from what I have found it is normal. A lot of guys were claiming that you can't get enough varget into a .223 case to hurt anything. hell, I even found one guy that would load .223 by filling the case with varget, scraping the top, then compressing it....and getting consistent groups with that

Crazy! I love varget for my 308 but I can get Ramshot stupid cheap so I run TAC for my normal 223 loads and Xterminator for my <50 gr bullets.

Ya, I originally planned on loading some 30-06 before .223 so I got a bottle of varget and of IMR 4064, but misplaced my 30-06 brass (had a few hundred pieces and they disappeared lol). I'll come across them when packing my apartment sooner or later though lol

I'm getting set up to run .308 soon as well, building an lr-308 this summer for 1000 yard shooting. I've got a hornady auto charge on order as well. (Wanting it for loading heavier .45 colt loads but figure it will make rifle loading a lot easier)

For the 4064 try reducing the load a bit, I had good results with around 23 grains of 4064 behind a 55g FMJ.

Anyone here have experience with the 6.5 Grendel? Looking for a solid 1100+ yard load. Also, what is the optimum barrel length to accomplish such a task? I'm hoping I can do it with a 20" at most.

I have no experience with the 6.5 grendel but you are going to have a lot of experimenting and fine tuning to find a 1100+ yard load. Some loads will get you close but you will have to fine the perfect load for your gun to get good accuracy at those ranges.

For sure. I've been doing it for a while, and have managed to develop several good long range loads for various calibers over the years. I just like to put the feelers out to see if I can't find a good starting point.

After doing some reading, I'm finding that 24"+ is probably going to be my barrel length if using the most popular components.

Cool deal sounds like a custom build. Let us see a picture of the gun when you get all the pieces together. Sounds like you know what you are doing. I am a little jealous if you have somewhere to shoot 1100+ yards. Best I can do by me is 200 yards and which I could really take my 300 win mag somewhere and let it stretch its legs a bit.

I think a heavier bullet will like the longer barrel better. Will be more stable. What are you choosing for bullet?

We have a spot to shoot up to 1.5 miles if need be:D unfortunately, I only have a rifle that will reach to about 1 mile on a cool day.

Well, I'm reading that the revised Grendel chamber specs will allow for up to 140 grains. I guess the question here is the same as what I ran into with the 300 win mag, where it becomes a choice between max horsepower vs better ballistic coefficient.
Since it's a relatively small case and a slowish velocity, I need to find what the trade-off is between a 120 A-MAX with a .510 ballistic coefficient vs. The 140 with a .585 at near max pressure. If the heavier bullet is slippery enough to make up for the lower velocity it will have, then I'll probably look there. But the problem I ran into with the 300 win mag was that I couldn't push a 220 SMK fast enough to match the distance the 208 A-MAX would give me out to 1600 yards+. That experience tells me to go with the 120. But who knows, I haven't run any numbers through my ballistics app yet.

I didn't see your 300 win mag comment earlier. Man, 200 yards with that thing is like having a caged animal. Haha. Bring it out west on vacation somewhere and shoot it a mile!

What kind of velocity will it carry at 1100 yds?

It looks like a 120 A-MAX with a muzzle velocity of 2600fps will fall out just shy of 1100. That's using the older chamber spec. Not sure how much case capacity increases with the newer length. If loading slightly hotter, it will easily surpass that. Unfortunately, this data uses a 24" barrel to achieve those velocities, so if I'm going to use a 20", I will have a hard time reaching that far out. Still, even 1000 yards from an AR15 platform would be nothing to scoff at.

Just loaded about 100 rounds of 45acp 230gr round nose with 5.3grs of red dot. Loaded on an old Dillon RL450 press.
