Safe to run an off-sized spare?

I'm swapping out my stock POS Dunlops (245/75/16) for some BFG 265/75/16's. I will eventually go buy a random used tire of the new size to go on the spare, but until then is the slightly smaller spare safe to use? I've read it can screw things up especially if used on a rear wheel.

 

those tires r soo close in size,ide say you'll b fine.its just a spare/temp. tire untill u get the flat fixed.with that being said using 4x4 isnt a good idea with diff. size tires.thats when u can screw stuff up.my spare is 1" smaller than my new tires now.no flat yet though.i plan on picking up the same size though.good luck.

 

As long as you only use it to get home or to the tire shop you'll be fine. Just think about how cars come with "donut" spares.

 

I still have the factory spare and am running 33s.

If the flat happens in the rear then I would recommend to put the spare on the front and the full size in the rear

 

I once read somewhere that, as a rule of thumb, the wear on the diff is about 1:100 with compact spare. Drive 50 miles with it, and the wear is about the same as putting 5000 miles on the diff normally.

 

On my dads burban with 35s he runs a 265 spare its funny
