I have mixed feelings about the laser. That's why I don't have one yet. I do keep it next to a Streamlight in the drawer though. Blind and shoot in the house.:D

Had one on my wife's LCR, but I took the battery out while she learned to shoot it.
Ended up selling it to a friend and she's happy with her 92FS.

The reason I say extra ammo is the simple fact of being prepaired, also in a stress situation you will be lucky to have a 50% hit rate and depending on many things a target mey not go down on the first, second, third, etc shot. so say you have 10 rounds at 50% hit rate and 50% of them shots are just fatty areas without vitals that 2.5 so you have maybe 3 good rounds, and if your target is "hyped up" there is still plenty of time do harm... Now I know this may seem "extreem and unlikely" and yes I have seen large targets drop on the spot by one .22short round. I however prefer to have as much ammo as reasonably possably.

Makes sense. Didn't consider the stress of the situation. I just hope that if/when the time comes that I have a better hit rate than 50%.

I only have them on carry guns. I like the front mounted one (Laserguard) better because I can turn it off at the pistol pits. I don't aim with it or depend on it all. I'ts just another tool. I figure if I'm ever in a position where I can't align my eyes with the sights it'll help me get a shot off. Also it might keep me from having to kill someone one day. I'll probably never need it. I'll probably never need the gun either, but it's for just in case.
I'm going to take the laser off next weekend to shoot an IDPA qualifier match. I usually use a G17, but since I don't get to compete as much anymore (now only five or six times a year) I'm going to use IDPA matches as practice with my carry gun. I'm also going to replace the night sights with Warren Tactical sights that I have on other pistols.

My ex has a Nano...I shot it a few times and it seemed decent enough and it fit her tiny hands pretty well

You nailed pretty much every reason why I hate lasers and lights

    BUT

I think lasers have a great purpose as a training aid for a novice shooter who is having trouble with pushing or pulling shots because of flinching etc. It enables someone who may be helping them to recognize the issue and help them correct it

I also have to admit I have a weapon mounted light. It's an Inforce APL. It doesn't stay on my pistol, and it's certainly not my go to flashlight, but what it does, is allow me to have a pistol, flashlight, and either radio or handcuffs in the other hand should I need to run out of my apartment without full gear on...which has certainly happened

I had considered getting the bodyguard with the laser sight for my wife, but I figured if a time came where she needed to draw it out, would she remember to turn the laser sight on? I feel that it's just another thing she may forget. I know people can tend to panic at a time like that so I just want her to be able to stay calm enough to aim and take the safety off. Which, with enough practice, which I'll me sure she gets, she won't need the laser optic.

Didn't read all the responses so I apologize if it's been already stated.

The main benefit or reason of one or more extra mags while CCW is that MOST firearm failures are due to magazines. The added benefit is more ammo.

Yeah, I didn't really think of that being a contributing factor. Easier to dump a jammed mag and pop in a new one then try to keep clearing the jam out. There are a few classes that I want my wife and I to take that teach your more about firearm training with handguns and rifles. After the cow class, can't hurt to take more classes. I find them to be interesting and fun.

    You won't.

"Bump in the night" your adrenaline is screaming, you are shaking, your fine motor skills are nonexistent. You'll be lucky to find the damned trigger.

That is a great point, though I won't rely on a handgun as a defensive weapon until I have put at least 200 rounds through it AND the magazine.
Ya... that's a lot of JHP downrange, but worth it.

    magazines. :D

    Excellent point.

When I carry any of my .45s, Dan Wesson Valor, Guardian, or ECO or my XDs, I carry a backup mag. Winchester Ranger in the gun and round nose in the back up mag.

    Well... ya... I have 6 for my XD9, 8 for my G26, 8 for my 1911, and my wife has 6... 3 10rd and 10 pre-ban 15rd for her 92FS.
All but a few for the 1911 run flawlessly. I have 4 that reliably feed JHP through the RIA 1911, so I'm happy, like a room without a roof ;)

How so? Already had one scare with my house alarm going off. Had my finger at the ready to the side of the trigger. Pretty easy to find. I may not be a perfect marksman or have the training of an operator but I do have some military firearm training.

    That's a big help.
Typically, your best pattern worsens 50% under duress.

That's why I'd like for my wife and I both to take classes offered at a few ranges here that teach you how to handle combat situations. Even though a B and E isn't technically a combat situation, it can still teach you to stay calm and think rationally. I don't take us carrying as a light subject since we now have a baby girl to protect. She is my whole world now. So, if the classes are offered, why not take them, ya know?

    Absofuckinglutely.

Any training available, go for it. Even if the instructor is a jackass, any experience is good. You can figure out yourself if what is being taught is not going to work in the real world.

Exactly! There are a lot of classes offered on base here at the Nellis gun range and I find classes like this to be interesting. I'm somewhat new to guns when it comes to conceal carrying and long range outside of the M16/M4, but I do take it seriously. Living in a big city like Las Vegas, I hear on the news every day about a stabbing or a shooting and I care for my family more than life itself. I want my wife to be as ready/comfortable as possible when the situation arises and I want to feel the same myself.

My CC instructor stood next to you screaming in your ear while you fired your qualifying shots to simulate some stress...
