Just realized... this is pretty sweet.

The Big Dipper is like a complete galactic compass.
We all know that the last two stars in the "pan" point to Polaris.
But I just noticed that the first two stars in the handle point almost directly to the center of the galaxy!

Well... given your age, this is probably no longer something taught at the 3rd grade level like it was when I was in school.

    That's my wallpaper at work.

I took those shots about 80 miles west of Phoenix. The glow is from one of the power plants. I was in Phoenix for a class, and had to leave for home the next day. It was after 2am when I took those shots and I didn't want to oversleep my checkout time, so I really couldn't go any more west, and by the time it would have been on the western horizon, the sun would have been coming up.

BTW: We are coming up on "prime time" for Milky Way shots.
The new moon of June and July are the best times... August if the new moon falls early in the month. Last week of July, the Milky Way rises around 9pm so it is well overhead or into the western sky at the darkest time of the night.

And that moss grows thickest on the North side of trees, but moss is kind of hard to find in the SW :D

We have a large hospital and clinic in Scottsdale (and Jax, Fl.) and I have to travel to them both from time to time. A year and a half ago I was in Scottsdale and headed North through the Superstition Mountains to do the Apache Trail in a rental car. They had gotten a fair amount of snow and when I stopped to get gas the lady asked if I had come up from the Valley to see the snow. When I left home to fly down there it was teens below zero and we had more than 3 feet of snow, about all I could mutter was something like not quite...

I know what Josh is saying though and agree the NW is the one of if not the most beautiful places in CONUS I have ever lived. Nothing wrong with the many other places in the Rockies further South and East, but to me there will always be something special about the NW.

I love your pictures Ben but this one really is special to me, great eye and thanks for posting!

A long time ago I had a Cannon AE-1 and about all there was to take pictures of out to sea was sunrises and sunsets. Got tired of that after awhile but you and Cody both have flipped that switch, I once again appreciate them.

Back in the 70's and early 80's we used to joke that the building cranes were the State bird on all the islands in Hawaii. Judging from the pictures Cody posts they were successful LOL. I love the pictures in this thread.

Mayo Clinic Murph. Not long after I retired from the Navy my father passed away of cancer. I was living in Asheville, NC at the time and a head hunter contacted me and the timing was right, figured I wasn't smart enough to cure cancer but could help support those that might. Ideologically it was a sound decision but didn't take long for me to see that those that need help now are just as important. So now I support and serve them. Guess you being a Ditch Doctor understand that... In the weekly challenge thread when you said that you wait till the last minute because you work best under pressure caused me to blow Diet Dew back up through my nose and mouth all over my computer and keyboard ;)

There's a lot more to see than sand and cactus in Arizona.
    Just look up.

I took those shots about 80 miles west of Phoenix. You don't get that ANYWHERE in SoCal.

    Wow. Well done Ben.

My wife had the camera most of the weekend, documenting the trip, basically just spraying and praying. I got a few when we would get stopped. Here is my favorite so far.
