So when traveling by plane and bringing a gun, you just lock the slide back, unload it completely, and use 2 locks for the case? Then let the front counter/TSA know you have a gun in your bag? Just curious...

Okay, just so I'm not crazy as I try to work this deal for two handguns, fees in CA are NOT taxed, correct? I have a feeling this gun shop is trying to tax gun + fees rather than gun + tax + fees. I never paid attention before, but it makes no sense that fees would be taxed.

Depends how your buying the gun Mike.

If your purchasing an in-stock gun from a typical gun store they should only be charging you gun + tax on gun + $25 DROS fee.

Private party transfer (which I assume your not doing due to tax) the fee is maxed out at $10 plus the $25 DROS = $35.

If your buying online or purchasing a gun that's not in stock and must be ordered in, the store can charge whatever they want and 'tax' whatever they want on that fee.

If your doing all the work to find the guns you want online then call/google th local gun stores in your area and see how much they charge for the transfer fee - it should be roughly 25-75 on top of the DROS fee.

And also remember you can only purchase 1 new pistol per month in CA - which means you'll have to most likely pay a separate DROS and wait an extra 30 days for the second gun.

S&W 500 in 6.5" barrel for some places work sends me, and the S&W Shield 40 as a compact home defense gun. Got a slight bit off both, and was able to hold the Shield until the 30 days are up after the Magnum purchase. :) Ever shot either of them?

JI've shot a 500 performance center I think it was a 10.5" and the non performance center one. Both were fun too shoot. The muzzle brake definitely makes a big difference. I was shooting 350 gr and 500 grain hand loads.

How'd that 500 grain do for you?? I've only shot a standard 8.5" w/ about a 350 grain. Got good groupings and target re-acquisition which surprised me.

I would suggest something a bit smaller for taking to work unless you are in pretty open area all the time. If you are in a vehicle and you need to pull the S&W with 6.5" barrel, you need more space to swing it. You also only have 5 shots. A full size .40 will typically have about 11+1 capacity, less recoil, and fits into holsters easier. That is my opinion on it everything.

I believe his work has him on foot in the wilderness fairly often, his weapon choice is for bears and other large (and aggressive) animals.

    Yup!

Good advice, Zach! This Magnum is only for large wild animals in an open setting, though (I don't work as a LEO). Debated something with a Casull round, but decided against it. I definitely agree with owning a full-sized .40. I can't go back to 9mm for defense. :)

In that case, have the 500 with a couple speed loaders, and maybe some lightweight rifle to throw on your back.

For my first pistol, I wanted a full size 9mm, so wifey and I went to a range, rented several different guns to shoot and she liked the S&W MP9 best. I liked the Walther PPQ best, but I got MP9 for her sake so if she needs to use it, it feels best for her. I got the Walther in .40 about 2 months ago and I love it and recommend it to anybody looking for the full size pistol. Field stripping is easier on the walther than the m&p as well.

ooo! Good call on the speed loaders. And that Walther looks sweet! Comfortable to shoot? Your wife must think it kicks a bit much, eh?

The walther fits my hand almost like it was a custom frame made just for me, and that is how it came from the factory.

Since I started getting guns, the only one that wifey has actually shot is the .22 rifle. She thinks the 9 mm kicks too much and is too loud.

forgot to upload pics of this one, working on em now

m1, it's serial has it made in feb 43

you can see where it was dragged, and it has marks from all over from someone using the stock/body to even out the rounds in the stripper clip before loading it. Wish we had more of a backstory to it

    it's a "winter safety"

supposedly, m14's and a few M1As had that safety put on em in the Korean war so they could be manipulated with winter gloves- there's also winter triggers that are these weird lever things that let you fire without putting your finger in the trigger guard

supposedly they're rare-ish on M1 garands, I've never asked my grandfather about it, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't some third-party collector that put it on there since my dad remembers playing with this rifle 40 years ago
