Morimoto XB LED Fogs (12-14): Install

BLUF: Ordered the brand new Morimoto XB LED Fogs from The Retrofit Source. These arrived in 2 days and I can honestly say that I am more than pleased with the overall quality and fit of these lights. These are being installed in a 2014 TRD Sport.

Note: I am not an employee of TRS, just a satisfied customer.

Install time: 30 minutes (although I took my time enjoying the install, it could be done in 15)

Tools:
-Philips Screwdriver
-Flathead Screwdriver
-10mm Socket
-Although not a tool, you will want 4 zipties

First impression:
Arrived in one piece, well packaged from TRS, packing peanuts everywhere . The lights are literally the exact same size as the OEM fogs. The only thing that comes not assembled are the male fittings on the pigtails (easy, more on that later). Overall great build quality, I will let you know how they turn out at night once it's dark!!

Now on to the install...

1. Mark the wall in front of the truck with painters tape so that you can check the new lights alignment once installed.


2. Remove 10mm bolts under the bumper (2 per side). These can also be removed with a philips screwdriver.


3. Remove plastic retainer screw from just inside the fender well. You only need to rotate it 90 degrees. Vertical is locked, horizontal is unlocked.


4. To make your life easier, turn your wheel inboard.

5. There are only 2 philips screws holding each fog light on, the inboard side tabs fit into holders without screws.



6. Go ahead an insert the wires into the plug for each light. Red on the new light goes to green on the harness. Remember that this is a 2014, you may want to double check your wires prior to inserting them into the plug... Just insert the prongs into the stock harness and test the light, if it doesn't work, swap them around. Once it's in, they are a pain to remove!



7. The wire loom is going to be somewhat longer now. My OCD would kill me if I didn't zip tie it up.



8. Check your alignment once you have both sides installed. If you need to raise or lower the beam, use the adjustment screw on the bottom of the light.


And there you go, brand new Morimoto LED fog lights... ENJOY!

Approx 3". What application are you trying to fit them to?

 

subd. i want to see the night pics before I buy them. I was also looking, Piaa has a Tacoma specific LED kit as well, but this is priced way better ($300 vs $175)

I wired mine straight to a relay and switch (my base model doesn't have wiring for fogs).
A few mornings ago I turned them on on my way to work, forgot to turn them off and didn't realize until the next morning when i saw the light shining on my hedges. My truck fired right up, no slow turning or nothing. It's amazing how much light and little power these draw.

Does anyone know of a direct comparison of these to a 35w HID retrofit? I'm on the fence which way I'm going to go.

 

I have 5000k HID bulbs in my fogs now. I am debating on switching over to these because my right hid burnt out/ stopped working. The hids were awesome on light output especially for ditches (HIDS also illuminate animal eyes really well). I bought a cheap set from DDM. The fogs were not bad on unfocused light. I found myself turning the fogs off in the city/busy highway because they illuminated the sides of cars next to me really bad and there is not a clean cutoff line. HID's were a night and day difference from stock. I would recommend them as a cheap alternative. but expect to have issues with any HID kit. I'll repost a full comparison if i pull the trigger

 

I've used DDM in the past and they are crap. All the bulb's I got from them burned out within a year. The quality control was just as bad (half my bulbs didn't match).

How bad was the cutoff in the fogs? That's what I'm really concerned about. I really don't want to be the jerk blinding everyone else because I want bright lights.

 

Since they use an acrylic projector lens, the output is much more focused than HIDs in a reflector could ever be.

does anyone know the height of the lights on the wall and at what distance the cut offs should be set at? i installed my fog lights later (factory ones) so i have no real factory reference... i do know that my existing ones are not close to aligned right now...
