I had a grizzly and cubs near camp Thursday night. Saw her as I was driving out the next morning. She was about 1/10 of a mile from another campsite that I almost took but changed my mind at the last second

Why does no one like mooses? I loves the mooses! you just gotta stay away from the moms and learn to read their body language. I was in my truck and let these guys determine just how close they were comfortable coming to me. If they would have put their ears back, head down or got their hair all bristled I would have gotten out of there but they were just casually grazing by and didn't really seem to care that I was there.

REI Basecamp 4. I was going to get the Kingdom 4 but the guy at the store talked me out of it and I think it was the right decision. While it's no 2-person tent that pops up in a few minutes it's not that bad, once I figured it out. Next time I think it'll take 10-15 minutes to setup at a relaxed pace.

don't support REI, they don't support us. check out sport chalet, more products, lower price and are a-ok with off-highway driving

Can you elaborate? I wasn't aware that REI was working against any trail rights for any one?

x2 for elaboration. REI is a co-op and if the board is sending money to the wrong groups, we as rei members, can vote them out and let them know we want our money to go else were.

Boydster has a conspiracy theory that REI is totally against any offroading type activities. They do support/promote offroading through federal programs that they give money to but the bulk of their interest is in non-motorized trail use like hiking and biking.

Not a picture of camp, but this was midday on day 3 of our trip. I have a ton of other pictures I need to go through. If I get that done tonight, I'll get them on here.

Where at in the big horns were you Lisa? (rough area so it stays a secret). The wyo crew were all up there. I saw two moose and a dozen elk on the way back home off red grade.

Not shocking, especially here in WA. I'm an avid mountaineer and hiker and I must say, whenever I'm truck camping off-road, I usually spend an hour or more picking up shotgun shells, targets, broken beer bottles etc.. at any given camp spot. Maybe we have a high concentration of morons here as I was blessed with beautiful camping all over the rest of the Western US on my latest trip (and generally a pile of firewood). Maybe there's a respect issue between local off-roaders and the hiking population that trickles into the REI board?

We see a lot of that out here too.
I try to make sure that I leave a site cleaner than I found it - pick up the garbage, clean out the fire pit, take down any clotheslines/ropes that people leave in trees (so the elk/moose/deer don't get their antlers tangled up, its happened before), report any vandalism or off trail use that I see... so frustrating that some people treat the forest like a dump.
Last year I was out taking pictures along a popular road close to town and whenever I stopped to take pictures I picked up any trash that I found and added it to my bag. After about 20 miles I had filled a ~40 gallon trash bag! And I probably passed up 10 bags worth of trash that I didn't see

Good on you guys! I know that being on both sides of the spectrum that when people see jeeps or 4x4's in the backcountry they always assume they are there to tear shit up. I have to explain that there are idiots who truck camp just like there are idiots who tent camp and not to stereotype just because they use an engine to get there. There's no better adventure than one that combines our vehicles, hiking, (preferably a snowboard or mt bike as well) and the mountains & canyons. I need to toss some big trash bags in my truck as well, that's a good idea! What a better way to get more respect than dropping off a giant trash bag after wheeling in the mountains!

    I have no serva...err...kids...

We all have our own way that we prefer to access and enjoy the outdoors, as long as we are leaving the area no worse off than when we got there I don't see the harm in it. It always helps to be courteous to others that you encounter on your travels as well - if I'm on a dusty road and come across some bikers or hikers I try to slow down to minimize the dust. Figure they'll be less likely to be cussing me out then!
I like to hike just as much as I like driving in the hills - just happens that some areas are better suited to one activity or another.

Anytime I find myself out camping in the wild, there's always broken glass and garbage left behind. I don't understand how some people can be so disgusting. Makes me lean toward DEC campgrounds for the sake of cleanliness. Plus, I like having a bathroom and a shower :p

I pick stuff up almost every time I go camping. A couple weeks back I filled my entire bed with trash that had been dumped.
