Well its smog time for me here in California and I removed my 2nd air filter 2 years ago when I bought my truck. Anyone have experience with this. Am I gonna fail. Reason I ask is that I remember when I originally read about taking it out that some people were saying that in ca it would not pass with it out so just curious what I need to do before visiting big brother at the smog station.

    • So a stock intake with internal modifications not visible on the outside should pass, right?
    • Does the inspection station actually check the CARB sticker # against a database? Stickers are easy enough to reproduce.

AFIK they dont check for an air filter on a smog check, nor do they check that the sticker is legit.

The guy I take mine to didn't look for the sticker. Didn't have a problem with my trd cai 1st gen. Even though it isn't CA legal. I even asked him about it and he just said because it has the trd logos it worked for him since it was oem Toyota. Kinda funny.

You shouldn't have a problem with your stock intake. If you have any type of aftermarket intake, i would switch it back just incase the smog guy decides to fail you on visual inspection. The visual is really on the smog guy, like what was mentioned already by dirt jumper

You sure the 1st gen TRD CAI wasn't CA legal when it was originally introduced? These rule changes aren't intended to be retroactive on older components.

It's a bit funny comparing the 2nd gen TRD CAI against the stock intake on the dual-VVTi 1GR-FE installations (FJ, 4R, Tundra). Almost makes you think it's a ripoff. :p

Well I believe I have read that it isn't. Could be wrong. Interweb always tells the truth, right? It's the 05+ trd cai first version. Not what you have pictured, although those look very similar.
