Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

I mentioned the whistling noise to the dealership when I took my 2013 Tacoma in for scheduled maintenance. They ordered a seal for the grill. Haven't had a chance to take it back to be installed but I'll let y'all know if that fixes it.

 

I have a '13 and it had the grille whistle, I fished some 1/4" tubing thru the seals and fixed that. I have another whistle on the passenger side front, I thought that it was the mirror and it does it as soon as you get above 35 mph. It doesn't sound exactly like the video and it is constant, my '06 never did either of these.

 

Ive had this problem on my truck, but Im positive it isnt the weather seals on the roof. I can almost bet its wind getting in the gaps of the mirrors. Ive heard it on both sides and the reason I know it isnt the weather stripping is because I just put the toyota roof rack on Saturday and Sunday it did it again. So I dont even have weather stripping up there and got the same sound.

Ive had cars whistle through the mirrors before, but this is like its vibrating while whistling and causing all sorts of noises.

 

Happened to me again when I drove up north to go off roading. I'm also convinced it's from the wind going over the mirrors.

Conditions that apply when the sound is happening:

- 70-75+ mph
- Crosswinds
- Weight in the bed of my truck

I think that when I add weight (a decent amount, had my full spare + hilift and a couple other things) to the bed of my 3" lifted truck sometimes the angle is just right so that the wind makes this sound. I don't think there is any fixing it besides getting new mirrors maybe.

 

+1 for the mirrors. My '05 DCSB did that the entire time I had the truck. It was annoying. I finally figured out that it was the mirrors by observing the vibration in the mirror (blurred image) each time. It only happened when I experienced a strong crosswind. My new '13 DCSB has only done this once so far.

I never looked for a solution. If you find one, I would love to read about it.

I looked at the weather stripping on both sides of the roof and "pushed on it" - it seemed to be entirely sealed to the roof. I had this happen on a 2012 GMC Acadia, but you could see were the weather stripping had popped out of the channel (the second time putting it back in the channel fixed it). Anyway, I take it from from your post that it should be obvious that the stripping is ?

 

I just got my 2011 done, the dealership told me it was a rare problem but not wanting to leave the truck there for a whole day, I took it to an auto glass place. I told the guy the problem and he was well aware of it, he took a caulking gun, ran a bead behind the rubber on the top of the windshield where it meets the roof and in 5 minutes the problem was solved. NO MORE NOISE..

 

I too had this lovely noise in my 2013 DCLB. Only happens when driving at highway speeds with strong head winds or crosswinds from left to right as sitting in the truck.

I took it back to the dealer to have the windshield fix only to have the noise comeback. Dealer was committed to solving the problem and re-seated the windshield twice.

After spending several weeks (and couple roles of electrical tape) taping different areas of the windshield, roof rack channel and mirror, I was at a loss as to the cause.

Last week I was driving to Abilene on I20 with a nice crosswind. My passenger was ready to shoot himself after having to endure the noise for more than hour. While leaning against the door to try hand localize the sound, we notice the pitch changed. the more pressure applied to the door the quieter it got. I pulled over and tape the door shut with some electrical tape and the noise was gone!

More taping and testing this week isolated the issue to the top door seal as the culprit. The dealer replaced both the inner and outer seal on the Passenger door yesterday.

If you are still having this issue after the windshield fix, try running a strip of electrical tape on the apex of the door jam. Make sure the tape covers the soft seal and sticks to both the truck body and door.

 

I had this with the factory antenna. I couldn't figure it out but once I changed the a 13" antenna it went away

 

And this whole time I was blaming the in-channel vent visors ... I'll look at those door seals one of these days

Noise only happens with the windows up at highway speed with a strong crosswind

I don't hear that great anyway, but my wife doesn't dig the noise at all

interesting Next time this happens i will grab the passenger door handle and pull on it and see if that changes the noise.

 

I'm just taking a shot in the dark here but my 97 does the same thing any known recall for this problem ?

 

This is mine last weekend. I listened to this for 100 miles. It is not the mirrors. It's the door seals. When it's happening, you can push on the door frame at the top and the tone changes. It happens on both front doors on my 2013 DC. I've taken it to three different dealers and told they can't replicate the noise and I'm quickly sent on my way. They have no initiative to try fixing noise complaints. I'm currently dealing with Toyota Corporate about it.

That is the exact noise I was experiencing. Drove out to Tahoe this past weekend (1600 Miles) with plenty of highway speeds and crosswinds, the new seals solved the problem.

 

New seals fixed it? What new seals. Same exact sound I have ..

 

Well hot dog... finally, i tried putting a towel in the mirrors and the noise still did its thing.

I wonder, (i will take a look at my door seals) but i wonder if you could do the same thing as the grill seal and just run some dripper pipe down it to stiffen it up.

I shall have a look tonight.

OMFG it is the door seals?!?!??! It's been pretty windy in the valley - and now that I have my Hi-Lift in the bed it seems to be at the perfect frequency at speeds as low as 55-60 sometimes to make that ridiculous noise.

I've been sure it was the mirrors forever - a design flaw that would never be fixed. I'm really stoked to try and get these replaced.

I had mine re-sealed for the second time. The fist time they used the same moulding the second time they put in a new style. see pictures. I hope my noise is gone. Put some masking tape over the moulding and see if it goes away.
