Strange issue with electrical system! Thoughts?

For starters I'm working with the 2012 TRD Sport DCLB with JBL sound and Entune.

I've been having a very intermittent/random issue when shutting down my truck. Sometimes, when parking after a long drive, I'll turn the headlights off and my radio will also go off just as if I'd hit the radio power button. I can hit the power on the radio and it will come back on. I've tried to catch the issue on camera, but its so random that I haven't been able to time it right when I have my camera handy. This has also happened when I'm driving and turn the lights on, but more frequently occurs when shutting them off.

To me, it seems that something may be crossed in the wiring or there could be a short somewhere, but electrical systems are not my forte.

I've searched the forum for some time trying to find another person with the same issue, but I can't find anything.

I don't think this is a major issue, but if someone could help throw out some ideas and/or things to check I'd greatly appreciate it.

Might want to take it in for warranty if you still have it

 

Definitely take it in if under warranty, electrical gremlins are a huge pain in the ass to deal with

 

Perhaps the radio is seeing a spike in the voltage/ noise on the power line when the lights are turned off (due to the fact that they do pull a few amps ...). Then the radio shuts off to prevent damage.
By all means, have the dealer fix it if under warranty. IF they can't find anything you can try putting a capacitor on the radio power line. If that fixes the problem then the dealer needs to check for a bad / restive wire or other related cause ...

 

I have nearly the same truck. Mine is Nautical Blue.

I have not had this problem but have observed a couple of things. After turning the truck off and removing the keys from the ignition, The headlights will stay on until the door is opened. This of course is normal. I have also noticed that the power windows will still operate for a length of time until the door is opened.

Some vehicles (Dodge Charger) allow the radio to stay on after the ignition is turned off until the doors are opened. I have to wonder if some of what you are experiencing is "normal" for your truck.

 

Unless you or someone recently did some electrical work on it, the wiring will be untouched and as good as new.

Take it in and ask them to explain why it happens.

 

Maybe the dealer will do an electrical analysis; possible the alternator has a flaw in one of the diodes which shows up as a surge as the regulator adjusts for the load. As noted the JBL electronics may be sensitive. Or this may be a defective radio in some way.
If not an alternator/voltage regulator problem, ask for a new radio. Hopefully you have some 3/36k warranty remaining.
Setup your video to record for awhile while you drive around?

I doubt this is normal because everytime this happens the truck is still running. (I left that part out) I always power everything off (lights, a/c, etc.) before turning off the ignition.

I figured the best route would be to take the truck in under warranty. I believe my 2 year toyota care just went out, but I bought the extended warranty out to 6 yrs. --> I'm guessing this is something that should be covered?

When taking in to the dealer, how would one pose the question? I highly doubt they'll be able to replicate the issue, which worries me that they probably won't do anything.

 

With these trucks, you can turn off and take the key out of ignition, and still be able to roll the window down or up. Headlights also stay on for a bit. But all the power cuts off after a minute or so.

If this was just a one time thing, then the dealer can't and won't try to fix it. If it happens all the time, the. They can try to fix it.

My 21012 manual says 3 yrs 36K mi. Toyota care is just fro Comp Maintenance. If you are under 36K Miles , bring it in now ...
