Rack system for (long) fishing rods?

I'm looking for any type of holder that can carry a 10' surf rod. I hate having it get banged around with all the beach chairs and stuff. I'd love to see what setups are out there, especially DIY stuff. Also, I was wondering if there was anyone using something that didn't require breaking it down into 2 pieces?

There are a ton of exterior racks for the truck. This is the one I use for my fly rods: http://www.rodmounts.com/sumo-magnet/, but Orvis, Cabella, and LL Bean also sell variations. Most of my rods are 9 foot so I dont think it would make a difference with your 10 ft rod. The only thing to be aware of is the width of the roof mounted holder. I often have my canoe on top (OEM Racks) and have to move the canoe all the way over to the driver side so that the roof mount will fit. It is not a problem and works fine, but just something to think about. I have used the rod holder at speeds up to 60mph on the hiway and on dirt trails without problem

 

I don't surf cast, but I do fresh water troll for coldwater fish and have 9' trolling rods that are a PITA to break down. All I do is run a bungee about the middle of the bed, put the rod butts against the cab, then use another bungee and weave the rods through it. So the rods are at like a 45 degree angle sticking up out of the bed. Most of the time the rods stay in the boat however.

 

Looks pretty cool but $150 is more than I want to spend. I'm also not too keen on having anything obstructing the windshield. If anything I think it'd be too annoying for my wife to stare at when we're on the road. I was thinking more along the lines of some type of PVC pipe holder. Did some searching and found a bunch of stuff that people put together. My main concern is all these setups take up too much bed room. Like this...



I want something a little less obstructive that can hold 1 or 2 rods.

I have a 7' saltwater rod and I just have a couple of large [1" wide] velcro cable ties and attach it to my OEM roof rack. Very secure. I do have a sleeve on the rod to prevent wear which wasn't very expensive either. I think this could work for 10'.

 

Not mines, but I have the exact same setup. Thule Xsporter w/ ski racks.

 

I already did a Google search. And a search in the Tacomaworld forums. Still haven't seen exactly what I'm looking for.

Ahhh, now we're getting somewhere! Thanks D Derek! That's perfect and looks easy to build. I'm curious how he attached the PVC to the wood? Super glue? I'll figure it out.

 

From the holes in the PVC , I'd say it was screwed or bolted on.

 

Then how do the rod handles pass through?
Oh wait, I see. There's a screw on the inside wall! The 2nd hole is probably to pass a screwdriver through. Nice.

 

racks are best. Otherwise, if they're sticking up, they'll be whipping all around in the wind while you drive.

Some people get long 4" or bigger PVC and attach that to their racks. Then they put their poles in the PVC.

Good point. I decided to take matters into my own hands and build my own. Below is the (almost) finished product. Had some 1.5" PVC lying around so took a trip to HomeDepot and picked up the rest of the hardware. Whole project cost me $25 including the black spray paint, which I haven't put on yet. This one holds 2 rods but add a cross coupling and two slip Ts and you got one that holds 4 rods.

 

Now that is slick OP....

a second one on the other side would great for is kayakers and our paddles.

 

This is my current set up cost me about 25 bucks, really pleased with it so far!

 

Thanks. Paddles sure, but I wouldn't hang a kayak on this. The arms aren't secure enough for anything that heavy.

 

oh heck no..yaks lay in the bed..i like to keep the paddles up and out of the way along with the poles
