No, just the "coking" effect causing the variable veins to freeze either wide open or shut, meaning somewhere in the power band, you'd be better off towing with a Civic

    Ahh, OK.
    Haven't run into that issue.
We had 2 turbos go on our truck before a old mechanic at dads work told him to let the truck idle before shutting it down if you've been over 10 LBS of boost.

You know the problems with the F250 but you always wanted one? And you love your Taco and if it's like most of ours I assume pretty trouble free?

Either way go with what makes you happy!! That's most important. But I would not buy one.

As a diesel mechanic by trade, I'd buy an ox-cart before I owned a 6.0L Powerjoke. If you think your Tacoma wears you out, compare that to the inside of your average tow truck, and your banker's office furniture. You'll be in both a lot more than now, thanks to owning what's quite possibly the shittiest engine ever built. These comments are based on real world personal experience with these engineering marvels. My father-in-law has an 06 with 110,000 miles and has spend over $5000 on parts alone for his engine in the last two years, not to mention my highly discounted labour. But, if that's what you want, I'm sure you'll find someone very happy to sell you theirs.

I had a 6.0 for 5 years and sold it with 200Kmiles on it. Only did a Bullet proof oil cooler and egr delete. Never had any issues with it. But, I changed oil and filter ever 5k and fuel every 7-10K. 6.0 is a good motor but just needs lots of maintenance. IMO. Also a monitor program is a most to see temps. I loved my 6.0 but just didn't need that much truck and mileage was killing me.

Idling before shutdown has to do with temp. The turbos are oil cooled, if you shut the engine off there is no more fresh oil being supplied to the turbo, if the turbo is still hot, the oil will cook. I always shut mine off with a egt @ or below 350*.

    Yep
We never installed a EGT gauge, or turbo timer. Air bags (for when we tow our camper trailer) is next on the list.

Look at it this way, if you're looking to buy a diesel, you better have deep pockets. Deeper than a Jeep owners....ask me how i know :D

Like stated above, maintenance is going to kill you. Everything is at least twice as expensive as it is for a gas motor. You could buy a 6.0, but you're going to need at least $10k ready to spend when you buy it. With a 6.0, its not wondering if the head gasket is going to blow, it's when it's going to blow. Like I said, before looking at any truck, get an Infinity DP tuner. It might end up saving you quite a bit. You'll definitely want to find a truck without blown head gaskets. (Duh, but they are few and far between) If the truck has been driven relatively hard while having blown head gaskets, it can easily melt or crack the pistons. So search for a truck without blown head gaskets, you cant exactly tell if it's blown without taking the cab off and checking them or if the heads are cracked without testing them, but the infinity will definitely help identify if anything is wrong.

You could go out and buy a brand new 6.7 for around $60k. Or you could buy a 6.0 with around 100k miles for $18-22K and then drop another $10k+ on the motor and have a solid, built truck. But don't forget about the other parts of the truck like the transmission, axles, and the normal maintenance.

Going along these lines, you'd be better off importing a diesel Hilux :D

Yep, it's been mentioned, and he's been informed on how to avoid the potential problems.

the transmissions (the auto ones anyway) are weak (Known to go after 250K-300K especially if it was a tow vehicle) on the 7.3's, the auto trans behind the 6.0 easily handles the stock power and a good bit more.

Welp, I said goodbye to the Taco yesterday. It was a sad day for sure. I ended up getting a great deal 2013 F150 crew cab 4x4 with the off-road package and ecoboost. It was hard to step away from Toyota, considering I've owned two tacomas as my last 2 vehicles. However, the more I drive my new F150, the less regret I feel. It feels sooooooo good to have room and not feel cramped!

I'm sure I'll be back in a Toyota one of these days. I can only hope my F150 is a fraction as reliable as my Taco!

Better off with a 12 Cummins than a Ford Power Joke.

I just traded my Tacoma in on a '14 F150 FX4 and so far I couldn't be happier. I really liked my Tacoma, but I have needed a full size for some time and the Tundra was never an option. I am with you. Every time I drive the Ford, the less I miss the Tacoma. Congrats on the new ride.

Be careful with the 6.0's. I had a 7.3 in my 2003 F250 and never had a lick of trouble. It was a damn tank and pretty sure the truck would rust out before motor failed. Had a 2005 F250 after that with the 6.0 and barely ever used it for it purposes whereas my 2003 was my work horse. Trailered 20k pounds often with the 7.3, never with the 6.0. Sold the7.3 with 150k miles on it with never any failures. Sold the 6.0 and the guy called me and said the head studs failed and blew the motor a few months after he bought it (common problem on the 6.0). That was at 75k miles and like I said, that truck was babied compared to the 7.3. A side note, the 6.0 was rated for more hp/tq, yet the 7.3 always felt like it had a lot more power when pulling similar weight. Had a new holland tractor and trailer that both trucks pulled.

My opinion, look for a 7.3.
