This is possibly the worst time to buy a Chevy in GM's entire history. Go ahead and Google it, I'm not bullshitting you.

    PS.

Bye, congrats on your new vehicle, hope you got one of the rare ones that isn't liable to kill you.

I'm not at all going to defend GM for its past practices and quality, but I think there is something to be said for a company owning up to its mistakes and taking steps to rectify the problems. Yes, GM has had a ton of recalls lately, but maybe that's a sign they are improving. I know the 2014 GM trucks get high remarks.

I mean, a lot of us 2nd gen owners would love it if Toyota would own up to its bullshit frame issues. All automakers do the same thing.

Not sure they are really owning up to it. Forced to owning up doesn't really count.

Then there's the whole bailout but I won't go into that.

I had an 09 Z71 Silverado that I inherited that I took a little over 100k before I traded it in. My dad had hauled a goose neck cattle trailer in it quite a bit and that had taken its toll on the transmission so before something catastrophic happened I decided to trade it in.

My Silverado drove like a caddilac on the road especially when I was making my trips between NC and Texas.. But eventually 14 mpg got me to the point where I was tired of always filling up.

Good luck with the truck! I miss mine sometimes.. but the nimble Tacoma with great gas mileage tends to make up for it

No one forced them to dive into ALL their models and issue recalls for a lot of cars that weren't even on the initial investigation's radar. They took the initiative to look into it themselves, and honestly, came up with solutions that helped a lot of airheaded customers. I've always been taught since beginning to drive not to have a huge key chain, both because it's hard on the ignition cylinder, and you can possibly hit it/hang it up and turn the car off accidentally (or engage the starter while running). That's what's causing a lot of these problems - 16 year old girls with 100 keys, fluffy rabbit's feet, and 13 other accessories on a giant key ring. No wonder there's an issue. I'm not saying GM didn't have a problem; I'm just saying they deserve a little credit for fixing it. Their new CEO is impressing me with her candidness on the issue.

Bailout is a totally different issue, and I probably don't disagree with your sentiments on that. But the fact is that the powers that be felt that GM's influence on the economy was great enough that it deserved saving. All we can hope for now is that our money went to a good cause.

Totally agree on knuckleheads with big keychains...I keep all my keys on a separate ring and only use the truck's solo. However, the fact is they knew about the potential problems (intercompany memos show this) years ago and didn't take then initiative at that point to correct the problem. My humble opinion was they were worried about saving the bottom line instead of taking these huge charges on recalls.

I think I agree with you more than maybe you think, haha. GM up until maybe 2012-2013 sucked. I wouldn't even consider their vehicles because of the corners cut, etc. I think my only difference in opinion is with the new leadership in the company, and their committment to fixing the previous crap and try and put out better cars now. After all, we should hope for that. More competition = better options for us.

Not a bad looking truck. I looked at one of the same vintage when I was shopping, and was very tempted, but I realized that the chin spoiler/air dam would never survive the 1st trip up to camp.
    Good Luck!

    I googled it. http://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorz...ers-with-the-lowest-and-highest-recall-rates/
Listed best to worst. Statistically, you have an 80% chance of having a Toyota recalled Vs a 65% chance a GM vehicle will get recalled. It surprised me too.

    1. Mercedes-Benz USA: 2.1 million recalled/5.2 million sold; 0.41 recall rate.
    2. Mazda Motor Corp: 5.2 million recalled/9.4 million sold; 0.55 recall rate.
    3. General Motors: 99.3 million recalled/153.2 million sold; 0.65 recall rate.
    4. Nissan North America: 19.1 million recalled/26.8 million sold; 0.71 recall rate.
    5. Subaru of America: 4.3 million recalled/6.0 million sold; 0.73 recall rate.
    6. Kia Motors: 3.7 million recalled/4.9 million sold; 0.77 recall rate.
    7. Toyota Motor Corp: 38.6 million recalled/48.1 million sold; 0.80 recall rate.
    8. BMW of North America: 5.1 million recalled/5.7 million sold; 0.90 recall rate.
    9. Ford Motor Co: 97.0 million recalled/104.7 million sold; 0.93 recall rate.
    10. American Honda Motor Co: 31.1 million recalled/32.9 million sold; 0.94 recall rate.
    11. Chrysler Group: 63.2 million recalled/63.2 million sold; 1.00 recall rate.
    12. Volvo Cars of North America: 3.3 million recalled/3.1 million sold; 1.05 recall rate.
    13. Volkswagen of America: 10.2 million recalled/9.7 million sold; 1.06 recall rate.

Recall rates can be misleading. It can be recalled for something relatively minor vs something that could potentially kill you.

My wife's Lexus was recalled for some trunk latch issue... in case you get locked in the trunk. Yeah... okay.

And the willingness of the manufacturer to issue a recall...like GM's deadly ignition key failures that they knew about for years.

Good luck with the Silverado. One of my friend's brother is a certified GM mechanic at a Chevy dealership, and not long ago he said he would never consider buying a GM or Chevy vehicle because of the high volume of new ones coming in with major engine issues lately. I also came from a 2001 S-10 and vowed it was the last Chevy/GM I will ever own after it left me sit and had to get it towed the second time in the same year. Also have owned four Chevy cars with a laundry list of problems and repairs before that.

On the other hand, my neighbor owns a pretty new Silverado fully loaded with leather and loves it, he traded a Z71 in for the new one. Said he has owned three of them in a row now and has only put brakes, oil, and tires into them. However he does buy new and trades them all in around 60k miles or so I think. So that's probably your best bet, trade it in by 70k miles or so and you should be good. Take that thing close to 100k miles and be prepared for it to fall apart. All 5 Chevy's I have owned really started costing me money right around 100k miles.
