Hey fellas, I just bought an 04 taco SR5 TRD 4 days ago. When doing the inspection myself, I noticed a fair amount of rust by the leaf springs on the frame. I mentioned it to the salesman, he says, "It's normal, they all have some. " Well, I got them down to 14000, its a great truck, but I just want the skinny on what I should do. Am I still covered on the warranty for the frame? What exactly did toyota offer when the frames started rusting out? I was completely unaware of this when I bought the truck. I did also purchase 3yr/36k warranty on this bad boy. Just hope they will stand behind this truck if I do have an issue with the frame in the future. I read a little in the frame rust thread, but I want a current anaylsis on where I stand in the whole scheme of things.

Should be covered until 2019. Toyota does several different things to cover warranty. They replace some frames, spray some frames, and sometimes buy truck back. Can call toyota and have inspected.Probably need vin number when you call. GL

    This only applies to 01-04
You get 15 years from your "in service" date (original purchase date) if you had the frame inspected within the inspection period they ran for a few years. When the frame was inspected they either replaced it -if the frame was rusted through- or they sprayed it with an anti-rust coating to prevent/slow future rusting. (some states may not have sprayed?) They only did the spray during the inspection period.

If your frame was inspected, passed, & sprayed and today they found rust holes (within 15 years of in-service date) then the frame will be replaced under warranty.

If the frame was never inspected you do not qualify for the 15 year warranty.
Toyota is no longer doing inspections so the only way that truck has a 15 year warranty is if a previous owner had it inspected. The dealer should be able to run the vin and tell you if the inspection was completed or not.

Gotcha. I assumed that an 04 would still qualify. My reg cab was coated but it was a 96. Their coating was half ass and now I'm paying the price 4 yrs after coating. Sorty op for bad info.:(

Gotta love the desert. I was worried about the rust issue but after seeing the pictures posted of the state of some frames, mine is showing how good an arid climate is for steel.

Plenty of info posted earlier but might be worth wandering into a dealership and asking.

Mines all peeling off now too. I just hope it rusts through before 2019 when mine expires.

Yeah, the east coast is mean on frames. It's more from road salts in winter than atmosphere where I live. We try to rinse after roads clear, but hard to rinse frame in below freezing temps. They use combinations here of sand and basically salt. Pre-treat roads before it even starts snowing.I live in the land of idiot drivers now a days!!

I'd rather have a rusty frame than a smashed truck or a dead family member. I'll take the salt over winter accidents.

Yeah the biggest problem here 1 hr from DC is people driving small cars with low clearance. Old rear wheel dive cars. Used to only be 4x4's. But yeah ,it saves lives because these idiots in vehicles that should be parked are otherwise sideways in the road. Too many transplants.haha

My parents live in WI. They rinse off at least once a month during the winter if not once a week. I found out from them that many of the car washes are set up for winter driving. I gather there is a sort of blow dry cycle to get most of the water off before hitting the freezing air. First time they did it, they found out it was best to turn the defroster on high and open the windows a tiny bit. Totally fogged up the windshield.

Idiot drivers are everywhere. I just saw a study that ranked NM (my state) dead last in terms of quality of drivers.

My 04 had the frame sprayed and the stuff is all peeling off and in bad shape. I actually have an appointment at the dealership next week to have the frame checked...pretty sure I'll be getting a new frame.

My mind is wondering if they sold me a "certified used vehicle" and I mentioned the rust, even if it wasn't inspected during the slotted recall time, wouldn't they still be responsible for the frame if it is faulty? I also have a 3 yr 36k warranty I purchased extra. I'm not sure if it is a bumper to bumper warranty though....grrr any thoughts?

Also, was the warranty only in certain states?

I have heard that not all states had frame recall. Don't know if it's for sure. Just gonna have to try and deal with toyota dealership on that I think. GL

Good news boys. Called toyota and it is covered under warranty until nov 2019 after pay off date. A weight has been lifted.
