All reg cabs have the " long " bed

All Tacomas are the same bed size except the mutant DCSB

Outbacks are very capable. I had an '08 before my Tacoma. I would still have it if it hadn't been totaled.

It's downright impressive where those things will go. I went many places with that car that an AWD lifted wagon had no business going. Its main weakness was approach and departure angles. Clearance itself was almost never an issue.

...and the 3.0L Boxer 6 under the hood of that thing was without a doubt the nicest 6 cylinder engine I've ever owned.

I actually haven't taken my truck any places that Outback went yet...too afraid to scratch it up in the narrow sections! It's the first vehicle I've owned that had no cosmetic flaws whatsoever when I got it.

So, after few days of obsessing over this, I've decided on a Baja. While long bed has some advantages, short bed its not a deal breaker and I would end up dropping alot of out of pocket cash if I went with some other configuration.

I would end up getting a lift, wheels and tires right away, dropping at least $2k, or even more. That will possibly void the warranty and if anything happens, Toyota will claim that i've caused issues by installing aftermarket shit. Getting a Baja kills few birds with one stone. I keep the warranty, get a lift, bigger tires, better suspension and rolling all that into the loan, will not significantly raise my payment. After the warranty is done I can gradually replace everything that I don't like. By adding a shell and an off-road bumper I get a truck that I want. If I end up hating Baja stuff for some reason, I don't think there will be a shortage of people wanting to buy slightly used TRD suspension parts.

As far as extra storage goes, I'm just going to keep my Thule Atlantis 1600 roof box, or maybe trade it for something smaller. That will solve all space issues.

I've emailed a bunch of dealers in a 500 mile range, and so far the best price I've gotten is $35,998. It's not as common of a configuration and they don't budge much, but the sticker on them is somewhere around $38,500. Some places have it listed for $42,000! lol

I'm not here to trash your choice or the Baja (some folks will) - but - before you sign on the dotted line, better double check that 'bigger tires' thing.

I think you'll find it comes with upgraded tires (BFG AT TA) in the *same* 265/70R16 size as the TRD OR.

If that's OK with you - fine. Just go into the deal eyes open.

Ah. Thanks. What i meant is "more aggressive" off-road tires than a TRD Sport that I originally wanted.

Just bought dclb TRD sport for 31K, and they have me 11 for my 2003 DC TRD off road. So it is definitely a regional issue. I had a few trucks on the lots to pick from here.

It took us over half a year to find any type of Pre runner Double Cab up here, you just don't see them. We got lucky and found a 2010 DCLB PreRunner SR-5 + V-6 in Timberland Mica with 23 K on it. Someone brought it up from North Carolina a couple years ago and had it stored. So far it has been a great truck for what we use it for.

    4x4? 31K sounds like a PreRunner price?

I know it may seem a little extreme to some, but seriously just look on ebay and search real far away from home on cars.com and auto trader until you find exactly what you want. Then fly there and drive your new ride home! Dealers will often pick you up from the airport in these cases. If you buy from a reputable dealer, and are looking for a newer vehicle, it is unlikely there will be some terrible deal breaking issue with the truck... and you will have what you are looking for.

To me, spending a weekend doing something like this is totally worth it to get the right truck that you will own for years. Plus its fun to travel somewhere!

Yes, 4x4 DCLB TRD Sport. (and $11K from the dealer on the gen1).

That's why I ended up buying a new truck. They had a '12 DC TRD Off Road, but their price was starting at $31k for that with 20K miles! The original price on the new truck was $33K. I couldn't believe the whole thing.

It sounds ridiculous except - they also had a '04 Prerunner, 2 door on the used lot. 125K miles, and they were asking $19K!!! The KBB on my truck was only $10K!

Anyway, it all happened very fast, I went in looking and had my new truck in 3 days. I actually felt like I left some money on the table, but I felt like it was a fair deal. I know they still made money, but I feel like they gave a bunch back to me too.

Maybe he thinks you meant out-the-door? A little under $31K was what I paid for mine, but there were lots of moving parts in the deal between an '04 for $11.5 (only paid $13 in 2009!) some cash, and 1.79% financing.

I think I could have sold my nice TRD OR DC for more than $11.5, but that $11.5 in trade comes right off my sales tax, so I'd almost need to have gotten $13.5 between minor repairs to make it pay off for me versus the trade. They sure as schnitzel put a $15999 sticker on it, lol.

It sounds like you were right in the ballpark on a good deal, at least from what I paid. I was ready to deal on Sat. morning and walked out (politely) over a $500 difference on paper. They called me back and the sales guy told me his manager wanted him to make the sale, so they did :)

Then again, I live in the town, and down the street from the sales guy. If they did get me for a few hundred over my absolute-best-shop-out-of-state-give-up-my-weekend, then I've decided not to be butt-hurt over it.

And that's your Dr. Phil moment, for today.

Smart dealers are getting good at these. Friend of mine did one of these. Dealer met them at the airport with all paperwork. My bud spent about 1/2 hour scoping out the truck, took it for a drive and signed the papers.
Was on his way back home barely 2 hours after landing.
Never even went to the dealer's lot.
He said the dealer said out of state deals are about 15% of his sales and climbing.

I purchased OOS for last 4 vehicles; I get temp tags and do my in-state dmv work and local taxes myself. Cost is INSTANTLY 500$ cheaper due to dealer fees in VA.
Availablity and price are the drivers; certain models are just not stocked in certain regions.
Also regional fees and policies can add to the price. E.g. SouthEast Toyota (SET) fees (500-750 additional) have been a big gripe for a long time (NC to Alabama charges this) so planning a trip up the E. coast to Central Atlantic toyota region or across to Gulf States region can save instantly. An airplane ride with your miles can be an excellent investment, chance to see family, not need a rental, etc. etc.....
