Can this even really be a debate. There is one clear winner.

Spinal Tap is the greatest 80's Hair band. Why? Because while everyone else was playing at 10 they were going to 11.

does g n r count as a hair band? they came n like wut '89? a little late for hair bands, n aerosmith is way to early for hair bands, and everyone wuz just imitating crue, then crye changed their look n that generation of rock fell apart, there was no other band in the 80's, crue was the only band that mattered

Ya know, I've been wanting to see what you guys thought about 2 theories I have:

    1. If it weren't for hair and glam bands (Poison, TS, etc) "metal" wouldn't have gone mainstream and been so popular leading to so many genre's as there are today. Hair/glam bands, while they may disgust the metal "purist" brought metal to the masses IMO.

    2. If it weren't for drugs and hair, we wouldn't have as much good music. Personally, I find that once a band cleans up their act and "cuts their hair", their music isn't as good. (i.e. Megadeth, Motley Crue) Take a look at a bands best selling album and see what stage of drugs/hair the band was in.

    just theories - nothing proven

Good point. Ya know, I was at the Dr. Feelgood show and I'm trying to remember if they had their booze on stage or not. I know Aerosmith was dry at that same time because they wouldn't allow alcohol to be sold at their show - I think that was the Pump tour. God that was 20 yrs ago. I feel old.

Well I lived/survived those days and saw about every "hair" band that has been listed here. Ratt was probably a favorite. I think I have seen them 6 times. The stuff I prefered I wouldn't lump in with the hair bands though. They were definitely more metal such as Testament, Megadeth, etc.

Anyone remember the early 90s band Lillian Axe? They recently played a local bar and sounded good even though there was only 1 original member. I felt bad for them though because the bar owner didn't advertise the show and there were probably @ 10 people there.

As far as a favorite metal band goes, I give it to Pantera (RIP Dime!!, getcha pull!). I liked Metallica up until And Justice For All and the new isn't bad but I think there are bands they have influenced that put out better material now; Lamb Of God, Shadow's Fall, Hatebreed, etc. There is a band called Volbeat from Denmark who I believe is opening for Metallica on their current tour. They may not be the heaviest but have some very good songs.
