Mike thanks for the reminder, I wasn't very confident on participating before the location change. I will bring the dates back up to my boss!

Either one is similar in terms of performance. From reviews:

SL1 is everything you could want, except:
-if you use all the buttons, get one of the other Rebel series. T4i and T5i will pretty much be identical except for fluff.
-if you want to have specialized settings and are a pro (I mean, SERIOUSLY pro, not some silly wedding photographer - I mean National Geographic pro), you need something like a 5D Mk III or the 1DX, which does EVERYthing
-if you are very rough on cameras, you need the pro series cameras that have magnesium bodies. Again, this is jumping to something like a 70D

If you aren't tied to Canon, the Nikon D3300 is going to be your competition, and probably better due to direct access buttons and better sensor. They should be equally matched performance-wise.

Many people get caught up in thinking the more a camera does, the better photographer they will be. The truth is that you are only as good as what you know how to do, and some of the extra electronics makes it easier to accomplish provided you know what you are trying to do.

I'm in, with the caveat that if I see a buck I will be delayed by however much time it takes to kill him. (Archery season is open Aug 30-Sep 28th)

SL1 is cool because it's a little smaller than the other canon DSLR but the LCD screen has no swivel on it. I have the t4i, pretty much same thing as t5i besides a cosmetic change or two. It's touch screen as well but that's all hype, in my opinion. I'm not sure how much of the touch screen I use, maybe I got used to it on my old Rebel. Do you guys plan on recording videos as well? If not, I suggest getting just the body only and investing in a decent lens. Canon offers refurbish cameras through their site and all their refurb camera comes with a 1-year factory warranty.

This one is pretty cool, t4i with their 18-135mm lens rather than having two in your link provided. The STM lens are made for recording videos so you get the silent auto focus whereas if it isn't STM, you can hear the motor focusing.

    http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/c...ebel-t4i-18-135mm-is-stm-lens-kit-refurbished

    EDIT
Sorry this was a quick response. Iso, Aperture, Shutter Speed. Read up and get the basics of it before you decide to spend money on lens, it'll make a world difference.

Check Amazon before you buy! They have great prices plus free shipping sometimes.

Seems like the sl1 edges it out by a small margin. They seem so similar it might be best if you found a local place that had them to hold them and see what one feels better in the hands. But if you are going to just go off stats go with the sl1.

I started off with the original digital rebel. I loved that camera. I think I put 50k photos on it. When I upgraded I did a lot of research and ended up getting the 7D. That was like going from a geo metro to a ferrari. I love the 7D. Here is just a few things I do with it.

I have a buddy that bought the maps for those routes...

Deal! Finally got a pic this morning of this buck I've seen a couple times this week. Not shooting a fork opening day again this year. I'm thinking I'll give archery deer season a try. There's a pond and creek right behind him I think I can use to my advantage later in the summer.

we went to a local camera store and did a side by side comparison. personally the T5i fits in my hands better. I like the weight of it. feels like a solid machine in my hand. My wife likes the small SL1 but doesn't mind the larger T5i. Neither of us care for the touch screen, but the swivel screen seems like a nice feature. As far as video we are undecided. right now we don't have anything to video. But we also don't have kids yet.

We are also debating the STM lenses verse the non STM lenses. how much of a difference when using video does the non STM make? can you actually hear the lenses focus? Right now I think we are leaning on investing a little more for the T5i

There are 3.5 Million people in the Seattle metro area. Good luck! You have to get up into the cascades to get away from people, even then it's not easy this time of year. Over the pass towards Ellensburg is much less populated. There is an awful lot of ocean nearby...

I actually put the touch screen to use on the 4th of July night. Had my camera set on a tripod, enabled live view, and used the 10-second delay timer to take a family picture  Yeah, the swivel is a nice feature to have, one thing that my old Rebel XS (1000D) didn't have.

I have not had any experience with the STM lens but from what I've read, that's their purpose - to have silent focus for recording videos. It is VERY noticeable when I hit the playback on my laptop or on the camera to watch the video and auto focus is on, loud grinding noise in the background. I've recorded short videos of family and I use manual focus, no biggie. Like Mike said, your phone will perform just as good.

Yeah man, go play with the camera as much as you can. I went in to BestBuy a handful of times to play with the 60D and T5i. Found a great deal on a used T4i and I jumped on it. I'll let you my lens so you can play with it first before deciding to dump that much $$ in one.

You can't go wrong with Canon. I bought the T2i kit from Costco.

Also, buy a 64GB Class 10 SDXC card. Class 10 is the speed - it'll give you better burst mode performance and ensure any video you take will be able to save without issue.

is that a WiFi capable card? The Canon doesn't have WiFi built in but I've been told that I can get a WiFi SD card

No it's not. Wifi SD cards seemed really gimmicky to me so I never looked into one. I'm not willing to pay the extra expense for smaller capacity Wifi enabled card when my little USB card reader is always on-hand.
