The old saying that good Tacomas don't stay on dealer's lots for long is statistically true:

Notice Access Cab isn't in the list. Mine was sitting on the dealer's lot for 3-4 months - built in Jan, bought in May.

Arb front bumper, warn winch, All Pro rear bumper, OME up front, OME and All Pro Standard in Back, ARB locker, 34 x 10.5 KO2's, 17" Level 8 Trackers, and fancy single piece driveshaft.
Data like this is why Toyota is in no hurry to bring out a new Tacoma.

    its a dangerous game -
On on hand, you really don't want to change a working formula, and even today, it is obviously still working. But when do you take the chance and make sure you dont fall behind (or more, as one might argue they already are). I love my 08, but i can see that certain features (engines and MPG more than anything) are falling behind....

Probably only build on demand and have a few for sale on the lot has a lot to do with those numbers. My toyota dealer has 5 Tacoma's for sale were Ford has 80 trucks f150 ecoboost or 5.0, 3.7 for sale .

In that link they have three categories for trucks; Full-Size Trucks, Small Trucks, and Trucklets

The Honda Ridgeline is the only one in the "Trucklet" category! Can someone please explain; WTF is a Trucklet? lol

    Urban Dictionary says; "It's not a truck; it's not a car. It's a trucklet"

Not quite. The data just means Toyota (and Nissan) have been good at gauging market demand and not over-producing. It also suggests Toyota can sell more trucks if they adopted the practice of American brands (producing a glut of trucks and cramming the vehicles down dealers' throats). Rather, data like this is why Tacoma prices are high and dealers don't discount them as much as the American brands.

Toyota has the technology. Look at the 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 for example - 276 hp without DI (Rav4, Venza), 305 hp with DI (IS350). Toyota is holding it back until competitors actually come onto the market and/or CAFE requirements come into effect.

OMFG Dodge is only selling a few thousand more trucks than Toyota. Dodge even sells there models an average of 2-3k less to customers and they still can't sell them over Ford and GM . I own a Dodge for work right now, it's a POS. They are replacing the front differential at 20K...

I'll tell you right now there is no better truck in the patch then the F150 in the half ton class. They work great for the 2-3 years those guys beat the living shit out of them. There only complaint is funny noises from that EcoBoost, but it never seems to actually break.

When I bought my regular cab, they said the reg cabs usually sold within a few days. Toyota doesn't sell many of them, but e people who want a regular cab really want one.

Supposedly this is the last year for it though, and I can see why Toyota would prefer to not have to deal with production and inventory for a model that sells in low numbers.

Ram has a few good innovations at the architectural level (air suspension, 4-link rear axle, Ram Box, bumper winch...), but yea the reliability has always been poor.

BTW, Tacoma sales surpassed GMC Sierra sales in Nov 2012:

Sorry, I just compared the charts. From the visual reference only it looks a lot closer.

In other news, Dodge trucks still suck
