I think this is a consequence of social networking and slack-tivisim. Someone posted a photo of a good looking girl cause they liked her, or the guns or the dead animals or whatever and hoards of people who are "outraged" (but won't do anything more than piss and moan on FB) can create a ground swell of hate and discontent...which must be answered by a hoard of equally lazy supporters...and on a normal news day-That shit is on Fox and CNN in no time and that gives more people the idea they need to share their opinion with the world...and thus the death spiral continues....and it applies to any walk of life or choice anyone can make...:/

    African Elephant - Vulnerable
    African Leopard - Near Threatened
    White Rhino - Near Threatened
    African Lion - Vulnerable
    Cape Buffalo - Least Concern
    Hippo - Vulnerable
    Nile Crocodile - Least Concern
You look at the pictures and think of Simba and the characters from the Lion king.. but what you dont understand is...

The Leopards have to be controlled to prevent them from eating the livestock of the villagers..

The elephants get old or injured they are killed for the meat to give to the local villagers and it cost $10k to kill it which goes to help the other animals in the reserve

The Lions are killed because too many adult make Lions become agressive and kill the young cubs to cause the females to go into heat and they fight over territories.. they also want to prevent inbreeding and keep blood lines strong..

The Rhino from this year was Tranq'd for research reasons and released.

Buffalo and Cros are over populated and Hippos are dangerous and pose a threat to villagers..

In the end it likely cost over $30k dollars for her to Trophy hunt and all the meat was given to the locals and the money goes to help keep the reservation park up and running.. and this happens alot its not like she is the only one..

Agree, I hunted in Zimbabwe back in August 2011. Once in a lifetime trip, I hunted some of the same animals she did. There's a lot of people saying that elephants and lions are threatened. In some places yes, but where I was they were a nusciance, elephants would roam around and destroy huge areas of foliage, The lion population is growing where I was and the ph (professional hunter) said that it was starting to affect the herds of other animals. She had a hell of a hunt.

Lets be real here , the root issue is there are too many people in the space , not too many animals

It's the same pretty much everywhere on the planet , animals that require large tracts of land to exist are coming into conflict for space with people , the main difference is that the humans are always growing in number and requiring more space while there is less and less space for the animals

That is why we are the top of the food chain.. I mean shit, I am sitting in on my couch typing on a device that relays what I am saying to a person on the other side of the continent... while every other creature or animal that is not a pet or in a zoo.. lives outside

Then again they could stop all these hunts, cut off that flow of money coming in, and then they wouldnt have money to help gain more land for the animals, or give them medical care when possible or prevent poachers..

What is why we are the top of the food chain ?

I don't necessarily disagree with managed hunts as part of a conservation strategy , but they aren't the only way to generate income as you seem to be suggesting in the above post , there has been great success with eco-tourism as well , but that is beside the point I was making .

It's only when humans overpopulate a wild area that the wild animals become " nuiscance " animals , kinda like blaming orangutans for hanging out in the palm oil plantations that we planted after nuking their forests

The US is similar. Our birthrate per woman is less than 2. We need 2 or greater in order to maintain/grow our population. Without immigration we'd be shrinking in population. "They" say that without immigration we'd be losing our advantage in the World market. "They" say that we "need" immigration in order to compete. Fortunately for the US it's not only Mexican children sneaking into the US. There are multitudes of well educated, contributing individuals immigrating to the US. There are also many students deciding to immigrate after they've received their US education.

China's one child policy led to quite a few abortions and abandoned babies so I'm not sure it had the intended effect. I think they've relaxed that restriction recently. I seem to recall they're OK with two now.

They're outraged because some "rich person" went to a foreign country and killed these animals. Most don't realize the wildlife management decisions these guys are making or that the outrageous fees they charge are what keep the game refuges going. Most don't remember that game wardens in Africa were fighting poachers with machetes-and losing their lives. The tag fees have helped turn that around for the better.

What I find ironic is those who bitch about hunters yet go to places on "eco" tours that are about as far from eco friendly as you can get. And arguably do more to influence animal behavior than hunters do.
