saw this about changing social program to guaranteed income of 20,000 per adult in canada as a method to eliminate poverty.

of course the tax burden seems outrageous, but then I thought, "what if this would replace Unemployment insurance, Education loans, and Social Welfare programs?" How much does that infrastructure to support just those two elements cost us, and if they could be eliminated, would the tax savings potentially pay for a large portion of the guaranteed income process and make Government smaller? There would be a ton of folks no longer working for the govt, instead out there in the workforce creating wealth for themselves.

 

I seen that and I thought, oh hell no. However, if it replaced some social welfare programs, than maybe. I just wish there was better policing of the users of social welfare. It drives me nuts when I see people on EI with new cars and partying like they've just got some mystery inheritance. I worked a dead end job making next to nothing to put myself through university and I had friends on EI making more than I was while they sat at home and played Xbox.

 

actually in thinking the above through, activists think money will solve poverty, but the missing puzzle piece is I think people need to have a vision of Purpose in their life. Without that they will gravitate to addiction, self esteem challenges, etc.

Of course you could look at it as enabling Darwin. If someone wants to waste their $20,000/ year and then there is no more publicly funded support, well I guess they end up back to dust, and hopefully do not breed in the meantime. Problem solved.
(Cruel yes, and i'm sure l'll get some hate for that comment.)

 

There's the issue. I'm sure I seen a stat somewhere that said impoverished families average 3-4 children, meanwhile wealthy families average 2.

 

- possibly because the current social welfare programs (provide) reward more money, if you have more kids.

So if you have a, let's say 40hr, 40k job, at 30% tax, this implementation means you are now working 40hrs for 10k a year.

Oversimplified, but that's my issue with it.

Not sure that'd help, as we seem to be headed in that direction. Not saying that's a bad thing. Just our current half-assed approach will not work; trying to appease private insurance companies while socializing medical care/coverage is ... well ... half-assed BS.

i get that. The discussion is the concept of a gov't guaranteed minimum income to replace welfare programs. A concept which I think might have merit if it could be cleanly implemented ... Not sure that's possible on either side of our border, politics being what they are.

My comment was more to the point of moving to the states to "get rid of social programs" would not change a lot in that regard. Further, I believe the US is moving towards socialized medicine and with it more, or enhancements to existing, social programs ... IMO we should. The medical coverage I had on active duty, and continue under as an AD retiree, is pretty much socialized on a smaller scale. The problem with our Affordable Care Act or "ObamaCare" is it kept private insurance companies in the middle. IMHO there isn't any room for capitalism in socialized medicine; hence I consider it a half-assed approach to a serious situation needing remedy.
