I have this in my long box and it fits the same. It works great for me in the summer when out camping i can lock up my valuables in it and go hiking and only bring one small key with me. use it lots because it locks and is not very noticeable

I am currently working with a sheet metal shop, and they should be sending me CAD drawings and pricing within the next two weeks or so. Once I have that info, and decide it is a worthwhile endeavor, I will post pics and pricing.
Just to give you an idea: It will hold five 1lb propane canisters...

One thing I have found out: not very cheap to manufacture. Even the Tuffy probably has a mfg. cost of at least $130.... material and mostly labor. Then add in the cost of the lock, powder coating, and then the packaging. Which is why the Tuffy retails for about $200.

2 yr update on the Tuffy Box. There's maybe a little rust on the hinge if you really look hard. It's never leaked water even using a power washer. I spray WD40 in the key slot every year. It's been working great. The main thing I use it for now is if my truck is going to be parked for long time (at the airport, sports games, etc.) i'll place my expensive stuff in there. I'm not saying it's more safe than inside the cab. It's just what I do so I feel like I actually needed to buy this thing.

Unless your box design is final assembled while already in place (or something), you may want to check twice about not having the sloped top... It seems to me that its there on the Tuffy simply so the box can be installed thru the opening in the bed box. I have two of the Tuffy boxes and I can say for certain that they would not have gone in without that slope being there.

Pic #5 in the OP is just about as far as the inside of the fender allows you to insert the box. From there is it tilted into place, and even with the slope it was a close shave on the passenger side for me.

That said, I'd love to see another option out there for a solid locking box. Right on for doing it!

I think you get the idea of what I did..... Again, I have made several working proto-types that are in both my 2005 and 2012 Tacomas.... without the sloped top.

I will post pics once I get pricing from my sheet metal shop.

    Nice. Looking forward to it.
You should also look into a better locking console idea. Console vaults are nice, but they take away too much space. :D

Awesome. Keep us posted. Really wanting to lock the console, but don't want to sacrifice all that space. I'm on the brink of just ordering a console vault, but if there is potentially another option, I'll wait.

Dry as a bone man. Going on 2 yrs and it's never leaked water one time. I check it after each car wash too (just out of curiosity) and it's dry.

So here are some pics of prototypes I have made; It is a modular design where the locking door is separate. Use / buy just the locking door to lock factory plastic toyota boxes, or buy both the locking door and large capacity storage boxes for the ultimate locking capacity. And you can install one on the passenger side.... and install your power outlet behind the locked door. There are also "cover plates" if you do not have the power outlet.... on both ends. These can be used to mount quick-connect air fittings, 12v power outlets... what ever you might want. These boxes would also make a great place to mount a VIAIR type of air compressor, inside or on top of the box (my plan when I have time).
Again, these are prototypes..... Locking doors and hinge will be stainless steel.
Any feedback / interest in purchase is welcome.

    Jesse

I put mine in several years ago when the truck was new. Great improvement. So much more secure than the plastic doors with no lock. Never regretted it. I also removed the key locks and put in combination locks. The combination can be set to any 3 digits. They were about $15 ea at the time. These are great boxes.
