hey, yea I was worried as well when I first drove my truck on the first tank of gas. I was only getting like 12 or 13 mpg. It'll get better. Congrats on the new truck though. :)

OK I hate to harp on this but does nobody read the manual? for gods sake you just spent upwards of 35k on a truck, that's a nice house in most parts of the country.and you didn't bother to read the manual that speaks about engine break in period??specifically the part about not taking long road trips (or pushing the engine to hard)till after the engine is broken in??of course you got shitty mileage as well as possibly shortened your engine life depending on how hard you pushed it.my advise us back it down a few notches until after break in. Good luck.and for gods sake do yourself a favor and go back and read your manual cover to cover.

Wow! I was taught to run the truck. Not sure why you are so negative. Run the truck(not abusively) and actually pull a grade in high gear to make engine work harder to help seat the valves.(like od instead of 4th). My truck is gonna trip 300,000 this yr without 1 engine issue. Not sure when oil change is on new vehicle,so would always do mine at 500 miles. Mobil 1 forever in my rides.lol

Ok, maybe a bit over the top in the a hole dept I'll admit.but I wouldn't rant if I didn't care. the FACTis that engine break in in a new vehicle is very important. not only that but the rest of the vehicle needs to be given time to "settle in".all those bolts, mounts , brackets, ect . thousands of moving parts all working in concert will serve you most reliably if you take it easy the first thousand miles or so,doubt me?consult you manual. heck, ask a cert Toyota Mechanic.the crapiest feeling in the world is paying for repairs on a vehicle that the bank still owns. and after all we buy Toyotas to avoid this. again, sorry for the asshole treatment.

Most of us are total toyota fans and understand your passion. We TRY to get the point across in our own way. You seem like a stand up guy ewbaltz with a sincere apology.maybe just save some of that for more appropriate times. They will happen. Not trying to scare away the newbies.haha:)

My mileage continually got better very gradually for approx. 10k miles before I saw normal, good mileage of approximately 19mpg. So don't get frustrated until you get to 10k miles or so.

Looks like you got your answer, I hope that it is correct. I also hope your engine isn't messed up and I didn't know about that, I will take heed of that in the future.

Buddy took his brand new, 2 day old, tacoma cross country, from maine to California. Offroading here and there, hauled a boat for a good time as well, and there were 2 other dudes in the truck , with a whole bunch of junk in the bed. That was 7 years ago, truck is still kicking ass. Father in law took the truck down to Florida two weeks after he bought his DCLB. Averaged 75mph plus. That was 6 years ago and 225K miles ago.

The whole break in this, and dont do that, this will seal that will settle, is beyond overrated and old school. From my experience, trust a certified Toyota mechanic at your own peril.

Maybe they are made differently than 6 years ago? :notsure: Not saying you aren't credible, but it certainly seems that people have had this problem before as well as OP. Even multiple members in this thread have reported seeing bad mileage at first. Surely there is a reason it would be in the manual.
