Alfuh, so you have Maxtracs, with the longer travel ICONS and nothing more in the front?

In the rear you have what spring or ???

My truck does well for most stuff I want it to do, but it needs more clearance.

Just got my Maxtrac installed. Couldn't be happier.

Yeah ive been told to check all those. The tie rods look and feel tight. Unless its the bolt the holds the tie rod to the spindle but from what ive checked its all tight. Not sure how to check my ball joints. The wheel has no play when off the ground so i dont think its any wheel bearing. I have also developed a slight steering wheel wobble between 50-60 which is unkown if its related or not. Ive had a balance and alignment done mulitple times in the past few weeks to double check and its always good. The tires are brand new so no abnormal wear. Driveshaft was just extended and balanced by a shop right after lift. My next step is to swap rims/tires with somone to eliminate the chance of a bent rim. also going to chave rims and tires measured for runout to determine any defects. but I believe its somthing related to the suspension not the tires and the wobble/vibes occured before with suspension change and with an old set of tires. Ive been battling it for almost 2 years now with no luck. If its not a rim then its suspension but i think ive checked it all. only new developments now is the clunk after maxtrac install

 

Have you checked both inner & outer tie rod ends or just the outer? The outers may be good but the inners could be worn & the play could cause the clunk. Maybe rotating the tie rods allowed a little more play, if I remember right when in the stock position there was a little more angle & possibly keeping it tighter. The new position straightened them out some & may have allowed some play.
Not positive, just throwing out ideas.
My daughter's boyfriend had a clunk & wobble, it was the inner & outer tie rod ends. I changed both side & problem solved.

 

ya, I ended up just taking the cotter pin out and tightening the castle nut down and it seems like it fixed it

 

how would i go about checking the innser and outter tie rods. I mean obviously the ball joint allows them to rotat back and forth but how would you know if they are bad?

 

Just a few more weeks of work and I'm pulling the trigger on these things. If you got yours installed by a shop, how much did it cost? If you did the installation yourself, how hard was it?

Also install isn't hard if you have a basic knowledge of tools and their use.

 

Just got mine done with bilstein 5100 all around with blocks (temporary) in the rear for $350 w/alignment. Check out Bear Frames in La Puente and ask for Eddie if you're local. He's also a taco owner and took care of my truck as if it was his. Drives so much better now. Even my wife was impressed and she hated driving my truck.

 

It is still campaign to install.

 

Take the wheel off, try to turn the rotor/caliper by hand & watch the tie rod. If either the inner or outer move before it actually starts to turn chances are they're bad. They shouldn't really have any play in them. The inners are a little harder to see cause they're in a boot but you should be able to tell if they move.

You don't have to remove the wheel to check them. If you feel the clunk, then look at the tie rod to figure if it is inner or outer.

 

That's true, I figured it would be easier to see & if the tie rod is bad you have to take it off anyway.

 

Both valid points, but the wheel gives a good spot to grab for the wiggle. And if they aren't bad, they save you the step of wheel removal.

That's how i make money. Have to think of the easiest way to do things and test stuff so i don't waste time. Then i have more time to work on more cars. Gotta make that money!
